Wordless Wednesday - Trumbull County OHIO

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

Recently an acquaintence gave me a book that she had purchased for $2 from the Auburn Placer Public Library. I believe it is one of those books that I've heard referred too as a BRAG BOOK. It is TRUMBULL Co, OHIO - each township has a section with maps, and pictures. Trumbull County is in the upper northeast area bordering on Pennsylvania. Of course I am not interested in the entire county but only in Kinsman Township and Hubbard Township.

Name of this book: Combination Atlas Map of Trumbull County, Ohio 1874

I am searching for HARTZELL, BRANFIELD, JAMES, HOTCHKISS, NOBLE, and HINDS. Some of the names are in the book but just mentioned, no write ups. Excellent maps of 1874.

If anyone has ancestors in Trumbull County, Ohio I would be glad to do a look in this book for you.

One of the things that I like about the So CA Jamboree is their help for Societys. The Jamboree is just a fun place to be. It has a good exhibit hall- lots to look through and to buy. The thrill of the raffle - just hoping that they call your number. Never know what you will win...........

Speaking of winning........ don't know whether you recall from past years posts......  but I did win a free jamboree registration for 2014. How exciting it that!! LOVE IT!! So you see buy those raffle tickets, attend the breakfasts, luncheons, banquets, have fun.

Motivation Monday - Sutro Library

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

Calling all Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society members, other society members and any interested family researchers in the Sacramento Valley area,  this is a special opportunity to do some family research at the Sutro Library in San Francisco. Take a day bus trip sponsored by Genealogical Association of Sacramento (GAS). Come one, come all. How relaxing will this be!  going down to San Francisco's famous Sutro Library and coming back - all by a relaxing bus - let someone else do the driving- oh yes, I can see the wisdom there.  (This will be my fourth (or more) time going, it is well worth it, price is right, ride in comfort, relax, sleep, talk with others of like mind and just enjoy the day.)

WHEN: March 26, 2014 - Wednesday
WHERE: Sutro Library on the campus of the University of San Francisco
COST: $40.00 - make check out to Genealogical Association of Sacramento or GAS
include your name, address, phone number and email address. AND where to pick you up. (Bus
        stops located below)
MAIL your check to Melanie Howard, 7345 Pritchard Rd, Sacramento, CA 95828

Our pick up sites are:
1) Massie Circle in the south area by Stockton Blvd and Mack Rd (6:45-7 am)
2) Arden Way and Point West Rd in front of the Double Tree Hotel (parking on the east side of Point West Road) time between 7:15-7:30am
3) Pick up at Park and Ride in West Sacramento by the Enterprise off-ramp about 7:45-8am
4) Last pick up is at Mace Blvd "Park & Ride" in Davis between 8-8:15am

This trip is an all day adventure. The bus takes us to the campus of the University of San Francisco and drops us off about a block from the library. If you need a golf cart please let Melanie know and she MAY be able to arrange something from the campus.

We arrive in San Francisco about 9:45am. The library opens at 10am. We stay at the library until 4:45pm and then make our way back to the bus pick up site (a block away)

We usually arrive in Sacramento about 7pm dropping off participants in a reverse order - Davis, West Sacramento, Arden and then Massie.

If you have any questions please contact Melanie Howard 916-383-1221 or melnesia@comcast.net
Let's do it, let's go together.  Invite another friend to go with you. You do need to let Melanie know very soon so she can keep a running tally. If not enough people sign up there will not be a bus trip. That would be very sad.

Sutro Library Collections - get ahead of the game and be more prepared. Check out the catelog and start your list of what books you want to look through, what films you want to go through. Be prepared (sounds alot like my scouting days - I guess some good things rubbed off on me)

If you have not been and a reminder to those that have been: You can take in very little into the library proper. Limted lockers are available just outside the entrance so be prepared to buddy up. This is where your ahead of time preparation will help you........ have your notepad, pencil, and research notes ready to go in with you. See the link above for Sutro Library catalog. Do your searches now.
I know as the time gets closer Melanie will be sending out her list of 'do's and don'ts' & 'what is available on campus for lunch or late snacks' and anything else of importance to make our trip more enjoyable.

See you on the bus.

Follow Friday - “Die Feuerzangenbowle" WHAT???

Editor's note:  Today's post by Sandra Gardner-Benward, written by Sacrametno German-American Cultural Center-Library

Are you German or have German Ancestry?
......... you may enjoy this event.

It is the ninth year that the Turn Verein's German-American Cultural Center – Library, has presented – obviously by popular demand – the film, “Die Feuerzangenbowle."  And would you believe that this German film (now with English subtitles) is now 70 years old, and that the custom of the Feuerzangenbowle drink (we might call it “burnt punch”) is much older?

The film stars a favorite German actor of the 1940s, Heinz Rühmann, playing the role of a university professor with a doctorate degree.  When he and his  friends, all in their 60s and 70s, get together to indulge in the heart-warming Feuerzangenbowle drink, they get carried away by telling stories of their school years, remembering all the nasty tricks they played on their teachers when they were young.

In Germany today, “Die Feuerzangenbowle” is a cult film.  Whenever it is ready to be shown, university students prepare by gathering up manual alarm clocks, flashlights, and small bits of paper, which they crumple into spitballs, to be put to work at the appropriate times, as dictated by the film.

University students in Germany today bring their mulled hot wine with them in thermos bottles, but we're going to do it up right at the Turn Verein by serving you the very same wine drink that you see warming beneath the flame of the Feuerzangenbowle in the first scene of this film.

About halfway through the film, we'll pause to let you enjoy both the visual delight and taste  of the glowing and steaming Feuerzangenbowle.  Then we'll return to watch the remainder of the movie. You'll find this to be an experience you won't soon forget!

THE DETAILS:

What: The showing of the 1944 film, "Die Feuerzangenbowle," with English subtitles

When: Friday, January 17, 2014, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Join us!

Where: In the Banquet Hall of the Sacramento Turn Verein, 3349 J Street, Sacramento

Admission: $15.00, which includes refreshments and the Feuerzangenbowle drink itself, with seconds if you like. (Other beverages will be available for purchase. No alcoholic drinks will be served to minors.)

The famous punch: Warmed and spiced red wine, into which sugar drips from a Zuckerhut (a German sugar loaf) soaked in rum, and set alight – a beautiful sight, especially when the lights are turned down. (You'll see!)

Society Saturday - MORE Ancestry?

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

Waaaaaay back in November Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society had a great presentation from Tamara Noe about Ancestry.com. Alot of great information and she ended with a good session of Q&A. There is so much about Ancestry to learn and then try. Yes, you need to try the suggestions otherwise it is lost. So if you haven't tried some of her hints and tips, do it.

With that said our wonderful Program Chair Carolee Jones scheduled Tamara for a second night of Ancestry.com on January 9, 2014. This will be geared toward the advanced searches and getting the most for your time on Ancestry.

WHEN: January 9, 2014  7pm
WHERE: Christ Community Church, 5025 Manzanita Ave, Carmichael, CA
PROGRAM: Ancestry.com with Tamara Noe

Getting millions of results from a search on Ancestry.com is only fun once, before you realize that most of them don’t make any sense at all. Knowing how to filter on Ancestry.com is the key to having better results. Learn where, how, when, and when not to filter. Many examples, including live searching, will be used in this class  ......... more information

DON'T FORGET there is a pre-meeting gathering starting at 6:15pm (or when you get there). The planned discussion is "Which online genealogy databases do you use?"

Happy New Year

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2014

The FIRST of every January seems to say to me (and others) 'this is a new beginning, what can I do differently starting now' Lots of New Year Resolutions with well meaning wishes and hopes. Nothing wrong with that either, but most of us want alot of things that are really not within reach or want to change or do way too much too quickly. I am going to try not to make any resolutions that I cannot achieve.- something to work towards but not unachiveable. Is that a resolution? YES!!!

My first resolution "Try not to make any resolutions that I cannot achieve- something to work towards"

My second resolution "Start writting down the family stories and lore? Don't let them disappear!"

AND- DID YOU KNOW........  January 1 has not always been the first day of a year                             March 11? or March 21 ?  Read more about it.........

Hey! Are you watching the Rose Bowl Parade? Best channel is HGTV- I've got front row seats, I am warm & comfy, in great company, have my hot chocolate in hand and I am still in my PJ's- only way to go UNLESS you are fortunate enough to be there in person
