Society Saturday: A Walk in the Past with the Fiddyment Family

Root Cellar SGS is Back from the HOT summer months.Hopefully everyone got to do some family researching and broke down a brickwall or two.

 Root Cellar SGS's  September Meeting was last Thursday. It was a memorable evening with presenter Christina Richter - " A Walk with David Fiddyment".

If you are from this area, Sacramento and Placer County, you will be familiar with this name Fiddyment......  there is the Fiddyment Farms, Fiddyment fields and especially the Fiddyment Road. ALL are connected with an original family - named for or after the original Fiddyment family in Roseville.

Christina was commissioned to write a book on the Fiddyment family. She researched the Fiddyment family for several years and you can see the results below...........

Our handout was an exert from her book which was very moving. I wanted to share just a couple of paragraphs with you ...........

"The man of 20 is far different from the man of 50, and at 80 he's much different than at any other time in his life. As the pages of time turn, people change and so do communities. Time tends to erase old landmarks, neighborhoods and even entire sections of a place. Much of Roseville has changed and for some, there are only memories where once was a place of happiness.

"One day I had the privilege of taking a walk with David on his old ranch property. The stately homestead brought a smile to his face and his descriptions of the past were animated. Her recalled where the dirt roadways on the ranch used to be, and where the buildings that once housed the life-blood of the Fiddyment family used to stand. As we approached the proud old home he quickly told me everything as though he might suddenly forget."

There was a book signing after the presentation. It went so well that Christina had to go get more books from her car......... good job Christina. (...and thanks to Root Cellar members and guests who support our speakers)


I am sure the Fiddyment family really appreciates all the time, effort and gray cell time you put into this book.

NOTE: Christina has been commissioned to write a book on Placer County. So you know what she will be doing for the next year or two..........  good luck!

Another side note.......  Christina told us that the Roseville Historic Society is considering  purchasing the now run down Fiddyment home and renovating it - turning it into an interactive living historic building. What an ambitious project but well worth the effort. Good Luck on that project..

Wisdom Wednesday: Virtual Conference - think home, PJ's, coffee or wine

I am excited and looking forward to this weekend. I am participating in something new this weekend........ well, it is new to me. Virtual Conferences of all kinds have been around for many years but I don't know that many of us take advantage of the opportunity to stay home or be anywhere and learn about things you want to hear about. I have participated in live streaming sessions, and of course webinar's and video's, but this Virtual Conference is an interesting concept and certainly a lot cheaper to attend than getting in your car or on an airplane, checking into a hotel for a week, eating out for three meals a day and sleeping or trying to sleep in a strange bed. The one thing I would miss is the people..........  all the other attendees that I would never get to meet, never get to talk to others of a like mind, exchange ideas and share experiences........  other than that, home is good.

Treasure Chest Thursday: Writing Your Own Obituary

I am writing my obituary. Why would I do that?  Why Not! I would like to be remembered. When I write my own obituary it will be as accurate/factual as possible and will let people know what I am all about.

 I just finished updating my mothers obituary but it had been originally written by my father in 2004 and then I continued (2007) to update it and then finalized it for publication (2015). This is not something that I write lightly and without care ....  it is very important to me that it is done correctly, it contains information that others years down the way can refer too and get good precise information from it about me, about my life and about my family. I really believe we all should begin our own and just keep tweaking it over the coming years. Remembering to let someone else know where it is so they can actually put it out for publication for you when the time comes.

Haven't you found an obituary of one (s) in your ancestry that had virtually no good information. Some had some good information but not really complete. AND others where the information was wrong. You wonder who put this together, obviously not the person that passed away. It was probably left to a relative that was not familiar or knew the stories but not the facts. Very disturbing!! Remember how disappointed you were, wishing there was more AND THERE ISN'T. Very discouraging. So it is a great idea for you to be prepared and get writing ............. do it in an outline form first, just get that important background information NOW put it in a written format, something you like.  Encourage others in your family and close friends to do the same.

What should be in an obituary? The basic information is important - full name, maiden name if it is a female, date and place of death, birth date and place of birth, parents names, mothers maiden name, burial place, spouse name, children's name and other close relatives names with their relationships.  NO Mr. & Mrs Smith OR MRS JOHN SMITH. The wife/daughter/niece have their own names and we want to know those names. To me these are the basics and then you fill it all in with other information about yourself. Where did your work? Are you retired? What hobbies or special interests? What organizations did you belong too? 

Let me introduce you to my mother who just passed August 7, 2015. I know this a very detailed obituary but I would be thrilled to find this from any of my ancestors.....  wouldn't you?

Treasure Chest Thursday - Everyone Loves a Good Mystery!!

Lynne Roberts is a long time member of Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society, she heads our LOOK UP assistance program, and is a very avid researcher.

Root Cellar SGS received a package in the mail from an outside researcher, Shelley Cardiel.  It was then packaged up and sent to our own Lynne Roberts. Shelley was asking for help in identifying living relatives of "Blanche Philippi's family".  Lynne would be the person to take on this challenge.

Soooo!  what do you think?

I wish someone would find a picture of one of my ancestors (Gardner, Branfield, Dietz, Little, Brownrigg etc) and share it with me. (hint hint)

Where would you start?
What would be your first step towards locating this living family?

Lynne does have some good clues already just from the picture......
she has her name, the location and year the photo was taken ...... she has the photographers name, and address. Never know if that photographer's business is still in existence. Maybe his photos and other items were been donated as a collection to a museum, library, or archives?

Humbly I might say, my first step would be to do a simple 'GOOGLE' search on this young ladies name, location and year, and also on the photographer's name too.  (I have had some great finds that surprised me by just using Google) Depending on what the Google search revealed, probably my next step might be to check the name in Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. I might even check with the Center for Sacramento History and see if the name is in any of their databases. What about you?
