Veterans Day - What Does it Mean to You?

        Veterans Day Ceremony, Tuesday November 11, 2014

I usually start the day off with my husband Chuck (a veteran himself) visiting Sylvan Cemetery on Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights under the gazebo. 


Generally the American Legion #637 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars hold the Veterans Day service. (Thank You)  Special Guests are invited..... usually Supervisor 4th District Roberta Mac Glashan, Citrus Heights Mayor Mel Turner and other members of the Citrus Heights city council, Citrus Height Police Chief Christopher Boyd, Citrus Heights Boy Scout Troop #228 (so good to see the Scouts involved year after year........  this is the Troop both my sons & step son were involved with- Love the scouting program), Folsom Harmony Express singers, and the Citrus Heights Police Department Honor Guard and bugler Ray Latimer. There might be a surprise of two. We listen, sing and share stories and sing some more .......... it is always uplifting. 

I honor my father (Lt Col John P Gardner Jr) and mother (Lt Mary Jane Little) who were both veterans from World War II. My dad also served in Korea. Both served their country, made it through and lived long lives. 

I honor my husband Sgt Charles Benward who served in Thailand.

Society Saturday - Archives Crawl

Archives Crawl is an event that has been happening in the Sacramento Area for several years. The concept and bright idea came from Portland Oregon. Representatives attended Portland's event and then brought the idea, the concept back to Sacramento. It has been a big hit.

Local Museum's, Library's and Archives plan this event out. There is a bus system in place for the day to take participants from one place to another. There is usually a passport of sorts handed out to each participant who in turns gets it stamped off as they visit specific places. Prizes at the end.................  and lots of learning along the way.

You can visit the  four main host locations -  in any order and check out the archives and vendors listed below. What a great day - a long day - but a good one .........  being able to visit all of these facilities in one day. WOW!! Impressive.

Here is the Root Cellar SGS table with members Sammie, Charlene, and Devora (& Marilyn taking the pictures). All are ready to talk to crawlers, show off our library, show off some of publications and sharing the benefits of membership with Root Cellar SGS.

Wordless Wednesday - FINALLY Fair Oaks Library Window Display

Wasn't it wonderful? 

So good to see Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society, Family Research & Genealogy in a public place so more people can learn about their family tree.  

Who did that?Who put this display together?  Elves, Fairies, Ghosts NO NO a Root Cellar SGS committee took time to create the display windows for Arden Dimick Library (September) and North Highland Antelope Library (October) and now Fair Oaks Library for the month of October ..........unfortunately all displays have been taken down and items redistributed to their owners for another year. I really hope you were able to visit one of these libraries in the last 60 days.............

A Day in Court with

THE LEGAL GENEALOGIST

I have referred to Judy and her writings from The Legal Genealogist Blog in many posts in the past. Nothing has changed, Judy continues to look out for all of us and tries to educate us in law - knowing that the laws of the day make it possible for family history researchers to better understand the lives of their ancestors and the records they created. So go to the blog and register, keep yourself updated and learn in the process.

I am attending the SMCGS 2014Fall Seminar in Menlo Park to listen to what Judy Russell has to say. I am looking for purls (knitting term) of wisdom. When we arrived and checked in, there was a silent auction and book sales,. Yes I checked through all the books. AND I carefully looked over the silent auction items. Tempted!!

The topics today were -

 "Where There Is - OR Isn't - A Will"
"The Fair Court - Records of Chancery Courts"
"Polls, Personalty and Property- Making Sense of Tax Lists"
"From Blackstone to the Statutes at Large - How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists"

 A couple of things I learned today (things that I might actually remember)
-Last Will and Testament.........  the will has to do with real property and testament has to do with personal property
-So when was, how to, what did, where was ??????  it depends!! it all depends on the place and the time.... every state has its own laws, but it also depends on what is the year. Nothing is exact and straight forward.
-Up through the mid 1800's Guardianship is about property (of the minor) not child protection or child care.
-Beware of the Crown Copyright - In the United Kingdom you can not republish...... check place/time
-Items to look for through the courts.....  Dockets (index of minutes case by case), Minutes - events described in details, Loose Papers or case files.......  always ask

*Black's Dictionary of Law: Containing Definitions of the Terms and Phrases of American and English Jurisprudence, Ancient, and Modern
*Blackstone's Commentaries of the Laws of England

I did spend a little time in the Family History Center- it is in this sweet little house on the property but not physically connected to the church property..............   I didn't have a lot of time to spend so I went right for the OHIO books and materials.......  there was a really nice binder that has a lot of facts, information and maps ALL of Ohio. I noticed that each state had the same binder, some with more information than others. (Yes it was a little wet today- but good to see it come)

This is a lot roomier than the inside of the house looks in this picture below. AND there are several smaller rooms off of this main room, with lots of computers, and microfilm reader room. Lots of good stuff tucked away in this small little house. They were geared up and staffed for the crowded that visited them during the lunch break and for an hour after the seminar ended. Great job.........

Yes, you can find this information in a lot of different places but it is still good to see it is available in paper form for reference........ I was checking on Stark County Ohio. Thanks.
