Just Thought You Would Be Interested.....................
I was doing some research on our April speaker, Melinda Herzog Landrith. My search took me online to a Sep/Oct Ancestry Magazine 1995. On page 14 & 15 was the article about our April speaker. I decided to look through the magazine and on the page before I found Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society mentioned as a resource to search........ imagine! wow! I know that name from somewhere, but where? Ok, Ok yes that's us. I was just surprised to see our name in a national magazine, but there it is.
The article was about the Gold Rush and the Donner Party and Sacramento ....... on the second page (page 13) of the article which was titled "Where to Search" under Local Resources there are four resources listed........
Sacramento Branch of the Family History Center
Genealogical and Historical Council of Sacramento Valley
Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society and
Mission Oaks Genealogical Club
It is good to see that 3 out 4 local resources are still very active and still growing......

Motivation Monday - It is Jamboree Time!
Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward
Another super genealogy conference is only a few months away.....
...... and this one is what I consider pretty local.
Yes, it is pretty local, it is drivable in a day and worth the time of the ride, and of course you can take what you want with you. Normally space is not a problem. I attended several years with several other Root Cellar friends and we took turns driving down. Wow, we had a great time. Other years I have taken Amtrak. That is ok but you start with a train and end up on a bus. What you bring is limited to what you can control. Recent years I have taken the plane, much more comfortable and really quick, but the inconvenience of being frisked and you are very limited on what you can bring. Just saying it is pretty local and plenty of ways of getting there.
I have always been lucky enough to stayed at the Marriott Hotel. This is where all the action is going on, and without a car it is difficult to get back and forth to another hotel except by taxi or another conference goer. The hotel is very nice, but it seems that the cost of the hotel rooms are going up each year. It is a major expense. Maybe look for a roommate, and this year they have just such a service. Try it!
If you looked over the schedule of workshops, classes, special activities you may be coming down several days before the conference actually begins.........
..........you will notice that on June 4 (day before conference begins) there is being offered a full day - a special event - this is a completely separate from the JAMBOREE conference.......... and you would register for it also.

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward
It is time again to come together, hear announcements, see what is happening in the world of Root Cellar and sit back for another great presentation...............
I found a great article in the Ancestry Magazine- Sep/Oct 1995 by Arlene Evans about Jim and Melinda Heirzog Landrith. It is very interesting and worth reading. It all started in 1977 in Iowa Hill when Melinda got her husband Jim to help extract the information on each head stone...... along with it being February and it started snowing. They have recorded more than 400 cemeteries. Early on Melinda learned that the DAR had recorded most of the larger cemeteries but did not go into the 'boonies' for all those smaller and forgotten gravesites. As you can see there are plenty of them. The Landriffs find the old towns by looking in the "California Gold Camps" by Erin Gudde. They have published 40 books (up through 1995) containing information on the cemeteries and a short history of the areas. The books, which are also available on microfiche at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City and through the authors.

Following Friday- SHOW off that family treasure & TELL the story- Denise Miller
Editor's note: Today's post was written by Denise Miller, organized by Sandra Gardner-Benward & pictures by Jude Nissila
...........and here is another of many 'members shared items' from our February Show N Tell. Enjoy!!
Introducing Denise Miller.........
Everyone got their glass?
....drinks all around!!!
Basil Hayden's is the lightest bodied bourbon whiskey in the family of Jim Beam small batch bourbons produced by Beam Suntory. It is 80 proof, in contrast with its three sibling brands of higher alcohol concentration (Knob Creek, Booker's, and Baker's).
The Basil Hayden's bourbon brand is named in honor of Basil Hayden, Sr., who was a Maryland Catholic that led a group of twenty-five Catholic families from Maryland into what is now Nelson County, Kentucky (near Bardstown) in 1785. This area is home to many of the famous bourbon brands, including Jim Beam. There Hayden donated the land for the first Catholic Church west of the Alleghenies and the first Catholic church in what is now the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Hayden was also a distiller, and he used a larger amount of rye in his mash than in some other bourbons. Later, Hayden's grandson Raymond B. Hayden founded a distillery inNelson
County and named his
label "Old Grand-Dad" " in honor of his
grandfather. The picture on the bottle was copied from a rendering of Basil
Sr.'s likeness. When Beam Industries introduced their "small batch"
collection, among the four was "Basil Hayden's", which the company
says uses a mash similar to that originally utilized by Hayden in 1792.
Hayden's family can be traced back to England (Norfolk) to the period shortly after the Norman Conquest. One ancestor, Simon de Heydon, was knighted by Richard the Lionheart in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade in the 1190s. His son, Thomas de Heydon, was made Justice Itinerant ofNorfolk
by Henry III. Around 1400, another ancestor,
John Heydon, appears to have been associated with "The Grove"– a
large estate in Watford (Hertfordshire), located about twenty miles northwest of London. Some
researchers have speculated that John Heydon was given the estate for his
father Sir Richard de Heydon's services in the French Wars, where Sir Richard
perished. Heydons definitely lived in Watford from the fourteenth through seventeenth
centuries.
The Heydons emigrated to the Virginia Colony in the 1660s, when much ofBritain became
inhospitable to Catholics. Francis Hayden, Basil's great-grandfather and the
first, moved from Virginia
to Maryland
in 1678, settling in St. Mary's County on St. Clement's Bay, where the family
remained until Basil led his band of Catholic families into present-day Nelson
County, Kentucky. During the American
Revolution, Basil supplied provisions to the Colonial Army.

Wordless Wednesday - SHOW off that family treasure & TELL the story - Kerry Anderson
Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward with help and additional picture from Kerry Anderson. Special thanks to Judy Nissila for meeting photos.
...........and here is the first of many 'members items' from our February Show N Tell. Enjoy!!
Kerry ANDERSON shared this wonderful walking cane which belonged to her Great Great Grandfather.
This cane was presented to her 2x grandfather, John Gleeson HIGGINS, at the Catholic Church Fair in Brimfield, Peoria, Illinois, in 1884.The cane is made of ebony wood and has a gold head inscribed with these words: "Presented to John G. Higgins at the Catholic Church Fair, Brimfield, Ill., June 1884. Although I do not know exactly why he received the cane, he was a prominent member of the Irish community in Peoria.
The HIGGINS family left Ballybricken, County Limerick, Ireland in the summer of 1846, aboard a ship named Victoria. That date makes it likely that the HIGGIN family group was escaping the Great Famine.
The family group was made up of John HIGGINS and Ann RIORDAN Higgins (my 4xgreat grandparents) and their seven children. The oldest was son Daniel whose wife Jane GLEESON Higgins was 81/2 months pregnant. John G. was born at sea to Daniel & Jane, (my 3xgreat grandparents), during the voyage.
They sailed to Quebec, Canada on the ship Victoria. and then followed the rivers and canals to Illinois, eventually settling in Peoria.
John Gleeson HIGGINS married Alice McDONNELL of Peoria in 1871and they had four children: Daniel, Alexander, Jennie, and Richard. When John G's father retired, John G. took over the family "feed & flour" store, and he was also a Justice of the Peace.
John G. & Alice and three of their grown children came to California in the early 1900's and settled in Vallejo where John G. owned Higgins Shoe Store.
He died in 1933.
........and now introducing you to John Gleeson HIGGINS with two of his grandsons, Richard (age 8) and John Earl (age 4) (Kerry's grandfather).....................

Motivation Monday - National Genealogical Society Conference
Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward
So the next big genealogy conference is right around the corner...... Are you going?
FYI: The early bird registration discount ends Monday, 30 March. In addition to enjoying a $35 discount, only early birds have the opportunity to order a printed syllabus. If you are going you need to register now.
This is going to be a very popular place for a conference..... more people than not have a relationship with Missouri and/or its surrounding 8 states. So many resources are available- so many library's and archives.
Are you going to be there? Have you made your hotel reservations yet? I sure hope the answer is YES because quite a number of the hotels are full up. Good Luck! Have you registered yet? It is time to do that and to make sure you get tickets to the other activities, events, luncheons etc. you need to register now.
Have you been following NGS blog? If not, whether you are going or not you can certainly learn quite a bit.
There will be two different tracks of live streaming sessions especially for those that will not be able make the conference in person. Read more about it. For those that are attending, you also have the opportunity to purchase both or either track and then while at conference you have the opportunity to expand your viewing of sessions by viewing the purchased ones after you return home. You will be able to view all that you paid for - up to 90 days after the conference closes (16 Aug 2015). Now that is a good deal.
Besides reading all about pre-conference, & conference speakers, presentations, societies, events, activities etc from the NGS blog posts, there is also a group of genealogy blogs that have been designated as the official media for the conference........... check it out and keep yourself in the know from day to day as the conference progresses............ Official Media. No this time I will not be attending the conference, maybe some of our other members that are attending will send me some updates from time to time...... (hint! hint!)
