More opportunities ……… remembering back only a couple of weeks ago & the NGS Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now you can purchase CD’s of many of the classes presented there. Good News, you can look through their list of CD’s.  (actually you can go back as far as their 2008 conference). This is amazing to me. If you are researching a certain area or a subject I’ll bet that you can find that their  CD’s are a great way to listen to experts and learn at your own pace. You can start and stop the CD as much as you need too. It gives you an opportunity to take notes, rewind, rewind, rewind, create list of suggestions of records to research. This also gives you an opportunity to hear speakers and subjects that may not be typically available at a local society’s meeting or conference.  Check it out JAMB    

Mark your calendar 21-24 August 2013 in Fort Wayne Indiana for the FGS Conference. Don’t know what Fort Wayne, Indiana is all about? Located there is the Allen County Public Library which houses the second largest Genealogical section. Oh yes it is a big deal.

 

Here I am in Burbank California for the 44^th Annual Southern California Jamboree.  What a quiet and relaxing place to be, especially when Sacramento area is forecast for 104-108 degrees OUCH!!  I ended up sitting in the courtyard between Marriott’s Hotel and the Convention Center. Wow, quiet, a nice cool breeze – so relaxing I almost fell asleep zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! But I didn’t. 

It is the calm before the storm…

                  A couple of people in the outside sitting area. Sure is relaxing and quiet right now

 

And the courtyard between the hotel and the convention center will have a set up for breakfast foods in the morning and then change over at noon to lunch foods. It will also be the center for the DNA day registration. Right now it is a little slice of heaven.

 

The Convention Center Hub area - eerie and quiet. Registration is straight ahead. Raffles down the right side, exhibit hall near right side ,some classrooms down at the end of the hall and tents outside but not yet

.........and up this hall will be many many large rounds tables each for a different discussion.   On Sunday it will be all societies showing off and that includes Root Cellar) Food court will be set up outside to the right and another entrance to the exhibit hall

Wishful Wednesday - Conference Time AGAIN

Yes, it is the Southern California Jamboree in Burbank California - starting on Thusday through Sunday. A conference is well worth the time, money and energy. I try to go each year and each year it is just a little different and offer special items too.

This year they are offering a full day of DNA with the experts as part of the pre-conference activities. This time I am armed with my numbers (acutally they are my brothers numbers) and am really looking forward to this day of informaiton with the experts. I hope to acutally know what they are talking about and what 'my' numbers mean by the end of day.

I am packed and flying out of  the Sacramento International Airport. Get ready to live the conference with me. Denise is here with me, so you might hear from her too.  I love sharing with you my experiences and hopefully you will find some value for yourself.

AGAIN, even the pay-per-view sessions are well worth the cost. What a great opportunity, but you need to pre-register first.


AND still another way to enjoy the conference and all it has to offer as far as the classes is to order the classes on a thumbdrive or DVD's  of video recordings and audio presentations.

The Conference Resource is offering the opportunity to preorder a thumb drive with all of the audio recorded sessions for just $186, which includes a $15 pre-conference discount. At Jamboree the price will be $199. The thumb drive will have around 115 recorded sessions.

For the best bargain, you can order the entire recorded session set, which includes nearly 35 DVDs of video recordings and about 115 audio presentations for $286. You'll see the speaker, see the visuals, and even see some of the audience. After the conference it will be $299.

NOTE: not all of the sessions will be included on the recordings. For example, the sessions that are video streamed will not be included in the Conference Resource set. Some speakers have requested that we not record their sessions, and of course we will respect their wishes

Jamboree FREE Live Streaming Sessions

Hot off the Presses! 

The Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Jamboree has announced the sessions that will be live streamed during the conference from Friday, June 7th through Sunday, June 9th.  This is great news for those of you who can't attend the Jamboree in person.  Live streamed sessions means that, from the comfort of your home, you can watch genealogical experts present their topic in front of a live audience in Burbank.  This is a very generous offer from SCGS so hopefully you can take advantage of it.

Tuesday's Tip: "Paging the Dead", a Book Review

I just finished reading a new family history mystery entitled “Paging the Dead” by Brynn Bonner. 

The two protagonists are genealogist Sophreena McClure and her business partner Esme Sabatier.  While working for a client tracing the Prichett family history, a murder occurs.  Soph and Esme get involved searching through the family bloodlines, old photographs and oral history to uncover the murderer.  Esme becomes haunted by a Prichett great-grandmother trying to convey the clues needed to solve the mystery.

It was a fun read with good tips on how to protect your own heirlooms as Soph and Esme compile Prichett heirlooms for scrapbooks.  I am looking forward to the next genealogy mystery featuring two new sleuths in the mystery genre.

Saturday Shopping Around - Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness is back?

Do you remember in past years there was a place on the web to go called

                                                                  "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness" (RAK)

It was a great website to get help and to give help to other Family Researcher. It was created by Bridgett and Doc Schneider in 1999. It was created to bring together members of the genealogy community from all around the world. Unfortunately in 2011, the website went offline.  However, in tribute to Doc and Bridgett and the efforts of thousands of volunteers, Family Tree Magazine, a partner, was inspired to create a place for researchers to come together and collaborate.

It is an exciting time. Mocavo.com  is launching "Genealogy Karma" which is modeled after Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. If you are looking for records or photos from an ancestor who lived far away, they will connect you with volunteers who can do this researcxh for you in other cities. Likewise, if  you would like to give back and have a little time to donate, you can sign up as a volunteer.

When you get to the website it greets you with:

We built Genealogy Karma to empower the Mocavo community and connect researchers around the country. Modeled after Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, we hope to give something back to our community. DID YOU KNOW............ Memorial Day Service at Sylvan Cemetery                                     

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This day is often confused with Veterans Day which is observed on November 1 and celebrates the service of all U. S. military veterans.
Every year, Sylvan Cemetery in Citrus Heights honors those who gave their lives in the defense of their country. This year the Memorial Day service will be held on Monday May 27, 2013 at Sylvan Cemetery, 7401 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights. Beginning at 10:30am with a walk through the historical section- about 30 minutes ending at the gazebo where there will be a one hour ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate. DID YOU KNOW........ Memorial Day, formerly known as Declaration Day, orginiated after the American Civil War in 1868 to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civel War. The end of May seemed to be appropriate since many spring flowers are available. By the 20th century Memorial Day has been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars in the past 236 years.
