JAMBOREE Saturday

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward  (photos contributed by Sandra Gardner-Benward and Denise Richmond)

Good Day to everyone.......   this was a great day and turned into an exciting evening. WIN WIN!

The morning sessions I choose were all "Genealogy Society Development Workshops"

My favorite one was of course the first one which I am still waking up for. It was titled "DIY: WDYTYA" Who Do You Think You Are?  Yes, you are right. It was a take off on the TV show Who
Do Think You Are?  Connie Moretti and Lisa Schmacher put together this program for the genealogy community and especially for the non-genealogy community. As a contribution to the City of Torrance Centennial Celebration, the South Bay Cities Genealogical Society presented a program based on the popular WDYTYA" with permission. They showed a slideshow of the completed program. They choose 3 leaders in their community, researched their ancestry, put together a scrapbook and DVD for each person. You can see some of the production through the pictures below. It was a formal event, held in a downtown community theater, reception before and after. A lot of work and it paid off for them.

The second society session was with Daniel Horowitz (MyHeritage) "Crowdsourcing: when the power of many benefits all. " By definition, crowdsourcing is a process that involves outsourcing tasks to an undefined group of people. This process can occur both online and offline. The idea is to not only to split the work among various people, but to also take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of each of the individuals for the benefit of the entire group.  Example: Wikipedia- group of individuals started to place their information on a common place accessible to the entire world. Another example: FamilySearch with the 1940 U.S. Census indexing project and other indexing projects.

AND the third Society offering "Double Your Membership, Double Your Fun: the UGA Case Study
with Janet Hovorka (owner of Family Chart Masters) outgoing President of the Utah Genealogical Society. A lot of great suggestions and super discussions between society leaders.

....to the exhibit hall........  shopping!!!

Friday Night Special Event - Alexandra Orton, members of the WDYTYA team. Behind the Scenes at "Who Do You Think You Are? Q&A session; Moderator Lisa Louise Cooke. The room was full for this event. People are curious about the behind the scenes activities, how they pick the characters, their research activity, how were the celebs to work with, were they coaxed, was their a script and much more. It was just an evening of two women on the stage being interviewed by Lisa Louise Cook and with lots of questions from the audience.

Tune in for the new season of Who Do You Think You Are? July 23, 2013 on TLC channel. Spread the word,

AND then came the big drawing of the night. "Genealogy Jamboree 2014 Gift Certificate - full weekend registration to the 45th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree" June 6,7,8, 2014........ and you will never guess who's name was called, you got it ME!!

                                                                      YIPPPPEY!!

Wishful Wednesday - Conference Time AGAIN

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

Yes, it is the Southern California Jamboree in Burbank California - starting on Thusday through Sunday. A conference is well worth the time, money and energy. I try to go each year and each year it is just a little different and offer special items too.

This year they are offering a full day of DNA with the experts as part of the pre-conference activities. This time I am armed with my numbers (acutally they are my brothers numbers) and am really looking forward to this day of informaiton with the experts. I hope to acutally know what they are talking about and what 'my' numbers mean by the end of day.

I am packed and flying out of  the Sacramento International Airport. Get ready to live the conference with me. Denise is here with me, so you might hear from her too.  I love sharing with you my experiences and hopefully you will find some value for yourself.

I am listing several excellent opportunities for you to enjoy the Jamboree first hand. But you need to act now.,... registration is required whether it is free or pay-per-view.............

Don't forget to re-read a post from a couple of days ago that Denise posted about free streaming classes from the Jamboree. What a great opportunity for those that will not be able to make the Jamboree.

AND now there is still another opportunity for those that cannot make the Jamboree to enjoy the special DNA day .......... these are live stream pay-per-view

The International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) and the Southern California Genealogical Society announce that four sessions of the “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” conference will be live streamed on a pay-for-view basis and available for viewing by genetic genealogists around the world.

The cost of $30 per individual presentation includes the session’s.   Jamboree is also offering a special discount for those who purchase a Full-Day Pass at the discounted price of $100. Full-Day Pass holders will receive a digital download of the entire conference syllabus of 12 articles at no additional cost.”
All these sessions are on Thursday June 6......  pre-registration required

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Tim Janzen, MD
TH004 - "Mapping Your Chromosomes with Autosomal DNA"
This presentation will describe techniques of doing chromosome mapping and triangulation using autosomal DNA results from 23andMe's test and Family Tree DNA's Family Finder test.

1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Blaine T. Bettinger, Ph.D.
TH008 - "Using Third-Party Tools to Analyze Your Autosomal DNA Results"
Although DNA testing companies provide an analysis of test results, there are many third-party tools that allow test-takers to use those results to learn even more about their genomic heritage.
2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
CeCe Moore
TH010 - "Working with Autosomal DNA: Genealogical Case Studies"
atDNA holds endless potential for learning about your family history and what your ancestors may have passed on to
you.Practical methods and examples from the presenter's research will be reviewed.

TH014 - 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Alice M. Fairhurst and David F. Reynolds
"The Changing Y-DNA Haplotree and Its Impact"
Learn how and why Y-DNA trees can differ and how the ISOGG team determines the location of SNPs on the tree. Find out how the most cutting edge SNP discoveries are unraveling the mystery of human ancestry.

AGAIN, even the pay-per-view sessions are well worth the cost. What a great opportunity, but you need to pre-register first.

AND still another way to enjoy the conference and all it has to offer as far as the classes is to order the classes on a thumbdrive or DVD's  of video recordings and audio presentations.
The Conference Resource is offering the opportunity to preorder a thumb drive with all of the audio recorded sessions for just $186, which includes a $15 pre-conference discount. At Jamboree the price will be $199. The thumb drive will have around 115 recorded sessions.

For the best bargain, you can order the entire recorded session set, which includes nearly 35 DVDs of video recordings and about 115 audio presentations for $286. You'll see the speaker, see the visuals, and even see some of the audience. After the conference it will be $299.

NOTE: not all of the sessions will be included on the recordings. For example, the sessions that are video streamed will not be included in the Conference Resource set. Some speakers have requested that we not record their sessions, and of course we will respect their wishes
So here are some great opportunities for learning free & for pay for those that are not able to make the Jamboree.
See you in Burbank and online...............

DNA and Genetic Genealogy Conference – Event

Announcing the Inaugural DNA and Genetic Genealogy Conference Sponsored by ISOGG and SCGS: To Be Held in Conjunction with the SCGS Genealogy Jamboree
I am so excited to finally be able to share the following news:
DNA and Genetic Genealogy Conference Jan 4, 2012 - The International Society of Genetic Genealogy and the Southern California Genealogical Society announce an innovative, important one-day DNA conference, “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013,” to be held June 6, 2013, in conjunction with the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree.
The featured speaker is Dr. Spencer Wells of the National Geographic Genographic Project, who will review the Genographic Project 2.0. Other speakers presenting state-of-the-art uses of DNA in the search for ancestors include The Genetic Genealogist Blaine Bettinger; Dr. Tim Janzen; The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell; Your Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore; DNA Testing Adviser Richard Hill; and Katherine Borges, the director of ISOGG. Also participating in the day-long seminar will be representatives from the major commercial DNA organizations – Family Tree DNA, 23andMe and AncestryDNA. Separate tracks will be targeted for beginners and advanced genetic genealogists.
One-on-one consultations will be available during the final hour of the day. Help is available to interpret results and to use the various testing organization websites and resources. This personal assistance will help even the most inexperienced family historians apply genetic genealogy as another tool in their research toolbox.
What makes this event so special? “This is the very first genetic genealogy conference that is independently produced by societies such as ISOGG and SCGS,” explained CeCe Moore, the conference co-chair. “I have dreamed of an ISOGG-sponsored genetic genealogy conference for a long time, and I am thrilled to be working in cooperation with the SCGS Jamboree on this inaugural event. Holding the conference in conjunction with the Genealogy Jamboree helps us reach many family historians who would otherwise not be able to attend.”
“We are so excited about breaking new ground in genetic genealogy gatherings,” said SCGS president Alice Fairhurst, who also leads the society’s DNA interest group and has been actively applying DNA in her own genealogy research. “As more family historians have DNA tests, genetic genealogy is becoming more valuable in the search for ancestors and living relatives.”
Registration for “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” and the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree opens on Friday, January 4, 2013. The conference will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA. The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will also be held at the Burbank Marriott on June 7-9, 2013.

The overall goal of the lecture is to give attendees a broad overview to finding the origins of their Irish ancestors. The lecture will start with the central event in the history of Irish genealogy, the destruction of the Public records Office in Dublin on June 30, 1922 near the end of the Irish Civil War. As a result unique challenges and realistic expectations for Irish ancestral research will be discussed.
Existing vital records and census records, along with unique census substitutes for 19th century Ireland, will be presented. Research materials available on-line and through film rental will be shown with examples available without the time and expense necessary to travel to Ireland.
This presentation will look at a variety of ways to organize information with the intent on noticing information and trends that were not obvious, preparing the researcher to present their information to others, and assisting the researching in seeing gaps in their research.
Note that Irish Protestants and resources and record repositories in Ireland will not be covered.
Michael Brophy is a professional genealogical researcher, heir search specialist, and lecturer in the Boston area. He has served as Program Director and Publicity Director for the Massachusetts Genealogical Council. He was the first Treasurer of the New England of Association of Professional Genealogists. Jamboree - Last Day

Blogger Group Photo - find Ron and Denise
The June Gloom weather had a strong foothold on the area this morning.  There was a light mist which lasted so long that the Marriott staff set-up the lunch buffet inside the conference center.  Yet Murphy's Law ruled, and by the 11:30 break for lunch, they had relocated everything outside.  The mist cleared but the sun was shy until later in the afternoon.

Today's class schedule included English, Scottish and Welsh research; using the iPad and iPhone for genealogy; collateral research; and funeral home and cemetery research.  Toss in a little help at Blogger Island and one last round-about through the exhibit hall and we called it a day.

We thank the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree Committee led by Paula and Leo, all the volunteers and the Marriott staff for their hospitality.

We also thank Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers for organizing and www.Geni.com for arranging for and sponsoring the Blogger Welcome Bags and the ice cream social.

A special tip of the cap goes to Lynn Parmenter and "I'm sorry I forgot her name", the SCGS Volunteer Coordinator, who were caught in the act of kindness which was appreciated.

Enjoy a few more pictures.  Be sure to mark your calendars for June 2012.

Jamboree Eve - Writer's Conference

I spent most of today with John Phillip Colletta.  Well, maybe 75+ other people did too - at the Writer's Conference sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS).  John presented four one-hour classes about the 'what, why, for whom and how' are you going to write; turning biographical facts into real life; using good writing principles; and writing narrative family history.  Many excellent and often humorous examples accompanied the technical aspects of writing.
John may be happy to know that I have already identified someone to serve as my "Elsie" - the "have red pencil and not afraid to use it" editor for my writings.  I have many notes, resources and inspiration.....to clear my calendar for the next year for writing my family history.

l-r: Pam Wiedenbeck, Lisa Alzo, Tom Underhill, Lorretto Szucs
The last session focused on publishing your writing.  The panel of experts included Lisa Alzo, Tom Underhill and Lorretto Szucs with moderator and SCGS member Pam Wiedenbeck.  They addressed commercial and self-publishing; identifying your publishing goals; and marketing yourself via blog and local newspaper writing.  Their concensus was to consult a publisher early on in your writing.

Thanks John and panel and SCGS for a very informative day!
