The 3rd Annual Sacramento Archives Crawl will be on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The theme this year is A Passion to Preserve.  Organizers recently announced that the commemorative bookmark featuring the California State Fair, ca. 1910, is now available at all four host archives.  Read more and follow the Crawl blog.

Sammie Hudgens, 2012 Crawl
RCSGS Library Chairperson
The Sacramento Archives Crawl is held in celebration of Archives Month (October) and allows history repositories to showcase their collections and offer demonstrations.

Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society (RCSGS) has participated in the Crawl since its inception and will again have an exhibit just outside its genealogy library at the California State Archives, one of the venues.  "Crawlers" will be able to browse the exhibit and library all in the same day.  Society volunteers will be available to offer genealogy research guidance so bring your questions, maybe even a pedigree chart.  The library is open to the public daily free of charge.

Mark your calendars now!

Follow Friday - Sacramento Archives Crawl

What's an Archive?  What does an Archive have that can help me with my family history research?

Answers to these and other questions can be found at the second annual Sacramento Archives Crawl on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.   This is an annual Archives Month event that takes place the first Saturday in October. Participants tour among four host archives in Sacramento, gathering stamps in their passports as they view treasures from dozens of archives and special collections libraries, visit with archivists, and go on special behind-the-scenes tours.

The four venues include the California State Archives, California State Library, Center for Sacramento History, and The Sacramento Room (Central Library).  This year's theme will be Building Sacramento/Building Communities, so crawlers can expect to see a wide range of materials documenting the growth of the region. Visit at least three of the four venues and leave with a set of four limited edition coasters.

As with the 2011 Sacramento Archives Crawl, participants will start at any of the four host locations and gather stamps in their passports as they view treasures from dozens of archives and special collections libraries, visit with archivists, and go on special behind-the-scenes tours.

Sammie Hudgens, Library Chairperson, will head the Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society and Library delegation  at its exhibit table.  The library, housed at the California State Archives, will be open for crawlers to peruse its extensive collections.

You're Invited! Crawling in Sacramento

Crawling in Sacramento?  What's going on here?
Nineteen archives and special collections libraries from the Sacramento area and beyond will be celebrating National Archives Month by exhibiting rarely-seen historic treasures from their collections at four host locations in the downtown area.

Start off at any of the host locations listed above--
-- then "crawl" to the others using the map provided in your Archives Crawl passport. At each location, you can view archival collections on display and take behind-the-scenes tours. Representatives from other archives and special collections libraries will be on hand to discuss their archival collections - historic photographs, rare books, historic artifacts - and answer your questions about how to connect with local history resources. Those who have their passports stamped by at least three of the host locations will receive a set of limited-edition collectible coasters with images from Sacramento's former Buffalo Brewing Company.

Self-promotion: Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society, a sponsor of Family History Day, will have an exhibit at the California State Archives location.  Our Librarian, Sammie Hudgens, and her team will be available to describe the extensive reference collections in our genealogical library housed at the State Archives.

Hope to see you there!  Knee-pads optional!
