Would you like to have all your genealogy notes right at your fingertips wherever you are? Evernote makes note taking and retrieval super fast and easy, and lets you clip items from the Internet. Lisa is a nationally known author and host of the Genealogy Gems Podcast. Her books and CDs will be available for purchase at the program.
Street parking near the Central Library is free on Sundays. There is additional free parking available on Sundays in the Sacramento County Jury parking lot, between 8th and 9th and F and G Streets. The entrance is off of 8th Street. You don't need to take a ticket, and you can park there all day (only on the weekends!).

Program Description:
As part of the Historical Records Survey, staff of the Works Progress Administration created indexes of historical records across the United States.  Between 1936 and 1943, unemployed teachers, writers, librarians, archivists and clerks earned on average $73 a month with HRS. They visited courthouses, archives, historical societies and libraries to analyze and compile inventories of state and county records, manuscript collections, newspapers and church archives. They got dirty in cemeteries, talked to older citizens and met with archivists and librarians.  Their mission? To conduct a national records survey consisting of guides to every state's manuscript collections and various federal records, plus a coast-to-coast master index of the collections. The project was never completed, and only about 2,000 of the inventories were even published. But much of the work - both published and unpublished - is preserved in a variety of local, state and federal repositories.  Learn more about these records and how they can help you with your research by attending this presentation.

About the Speaker
Gena Philibert Ortega holds a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology and Women's Studies) and a Master's degree in Religion. Presenting on various subjects involving genealogy, Gena has spoken to groups throughout California and in Utah as well as virtually to audiences in the United States and Europe. Gena is the author of over 100 articles published in genealogy newsletters and magazines. Her writings can also be found on her blogs, Gena's Genealogy and Food.Family.Ephemera. She is also the author of the books, "Putting the Pieces Together" and the "Cemeteries of the Eastern Sierra" (Arcadia Publishing, 2007). Gena serves as Vice-President for the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists.

You're Invited! Crawling in Sacramento

 

Crawling in Sacramento?  What's going on here?

• Event: “Explore History: Sacramento Archives Crawl”
• Date: Saturday, October 1, 2011

Nineteen archives and special collections libraries from the Sacramento area and beyond will be celebrating National Archives Month by exhibiting rarely-seen historic treasures from their collections at four host locations in the downtown area. 

Start off at any of the host locations listed above---- then "crawl" to the others using the map provided in your Archives Crawl passport. At each location, you can view archival collections on display and take behind-the-scenes tours. Representatives from other archives and special collections libraries will be on hand to discuss their archival collections - historic photographs, rare books, historic artifacts - and answer your questions about how to connect with local history resources. Those who have their passports stamped by at least three of the host locations will receive a set of limited-edition collectible coasters with images from Sacramento's former Buffalo Brewing Company.

Self-promotion: Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society, a sponsor of Family History Day, will have an exhibit at the California State Archives location.  Our Librarian, Sammie Hudgens, and her team will be available to describe the extensive reference collections in our genealogical library housed at the State Archives.

Central Library’s genealogy volunteer is available to meet with you individually to help you with your family history research.  Appointments are 45 minutes in length.  We now have a second volunteer, so appointments are also available on Wednesdays, 11:00 am and 12:00 pm.
