Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento Presents: Case Study - Reconstructing Family Information From Almost Nothing

The public is welcome at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento meeting on Sunday, January 20, 2013 starting at 10 a.m. 

Speaker Janice Sellars will present "Reconstructing Family Information From Almost Nothing", a case study demonstrating techniques and sources allowing the reconstruction of seven generations of a family.  The immigrant ancestors of the family came from Eastern Europe to rural western Pennsylvania in the mid-1800s.  Janice's search began with the slimmest of information -- a town name, one person's last name, a married woman's first name and a third person's occupation.  A key clue was a newspaper obituary.

About the Speaker
Janice Sellers is a professional genealogist who specializes in newspaper and Jewish research.  She is the editor of two genealogy journals and a member of numerous genealogy societies, including the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society.  Janice has volunteered for 12 years at the Oakland FamilySearch Library.

"Searching for Living People"

Bay Area genealogist Ron Arons will talk about the value of finding people who might know more about your family than can be found in any document. His presentation will include scores of websites to find almost any living person, whether you know their correct surnames or not.

In 2005, Ron won a New York State Archives grant for his historical criminal research of Jews in new York City. In 2008, he published "The Jews of Sing Sing" about Jewish criminals who served time "up the river" at the famous prison in New York. Ron appeared on the PBS special, "The Jewish Americans," talking about famous Jewish criminals.

Program: City Directories, A  Problem-Solving Approach

Presenter: Glenda LloydArea genealogist Glenda Lloyd  will speak about the value of city directories, published local listings that  date from the early 1800s. City directories offer genealogists a great  resource in finding relatives years before the telephone book, and a way to  locate them between censuses. Glenda Gardner Lloyd is a  fourth-generation Californian who grew up on a cattle ranch in northeastern  California and attended a one-room school. After a lengthy career as an  elementary school teacher, Glenda helped found Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society, and served as its first president.  She taught  genealogy classes through the San Juan Adult Education for the past 25  years.

Steve Morse and the 1940 U.S. Census

All are invited to the next program at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento.

• When:  Sunday, February 19, 2012
• Where: Albert Einstein Residence Center, 1935 Wright St., Sacramento
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Program: "Getting Ready for the 1940 Census -- Searching Without a  Name Index"

When the 1940 U.S. census is released on 2 April 2012, it will not have a name index, and one may not be  available for up to six months. So finding people in the census will involve searching by location instead. Bay Area genealogist Steve Morse will focus on searching the census without a name index.  The census  is organized by Enumeration Districts, or EDs, so the location needs to be converted to an ED before the census can be accessed.  Morse's One-Step website contains numerous tools for obtaining EDs.  His talk will present  various tools and show how each can be used.

About the Speaker
Yael Numark is a Sacramentan born in Mumbai (Bombay) who will discuss the legacy and history of India's Jewish communities.  Yael says many of the same Jewish traditions found throughout the world would be found in Mumbai's eight synagogues, although there are also traditions specific to India.  The written record of Jews in India goes back to the 1700s.

All are welcome to hear Victoria Fisch speak at the Jewish Genealogical Society meeting.  Victoria will step in due to the illness of the previously scheduled speaker.

Victoria will explore little known methods of getting the most out of the Ancestry.com search engines.  She'll explain alternative ways of searching for your ancestors when their names have been mis-transcribed, finding records in lesser-used databases, how to best set up charts, and how to keep your chronological records useful.

About the Speaker
Victoria Fisch is the current president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento and is the northern California editor of the Western States Jewish History Journal. She is currently editing a book on the historical Jewish community of Santa Cruz, and is a researcher of the Jews of the Gold Rush.  Her Ancestry.com trees contain thousands of individuals and her experience with this website has given her insight into how to make it work for you.  During her talk Monday evening she'll go online with Ancestry.com.
