Every summer, these two restless wanderers, Carpenter and Riemer, go snooping around in Germany, scratching for whatever snippets of information can be found – anything new, different, odd, or perplexing – all in the fields of German genealogy, German history, and German culture. Now comes their winter excursion.
Just three days before the Sacramento German Genealogy Society (SGGS) meeting on January 22nd, the pair will have returned, breathless, from having attended the five-day German track of the annual Salt Lake Institute in Salt Lake City. At this meeting, with their heads bubbling with whatever “neat stuff” they have come away with, they will lay out and discuss as fresh discoveries for all to see, hear, and digest.
Date: Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: St. Marks Methodist Church, 2391 St. Marks Way, Sacramento
Meetings are held in MacMurdo Hall, on the basement level. An elevator is available. Guests are welcome. Attendees are advised to arrive early, perhaps at 12:30 or even a little earlier, in order to have opportunities (1) to look over the books for sale, (2) to discuss a problem with a “Quick Questions” expert, or (3) to become acquainted with other services that SGGS offers. Admission is free.
Attendees are also welcome to attend the “Study Group,” a small group that meets on the same day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the church's Education Building (second floor, usually in room E-22). People who attend the Study Group discuss ideas and make suggestions for researching specific German ancestors. Admission is free.
Stop by the Sacramento German Genealogy Society website for more information.

Society Saturday - Great Moves for Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society
If you're a regular at any of these meetings, you already understand the necessity for the moves. The community room at the grocery store where the board meetings were held was free but at the discretion of the manager so bumping was always a concern. The historic schoolhouse where the general membership meetings were held had a nominal rental fee but it lacked adequate space, handicapped accessibility features, a paved and lighted parking lot, and reliable heating and air conditioning. The former workshop location was free but adequate parking became an issue.
Scheduling issues at the new locations precluded Root Cellar from having only one location and the same day for all meetings. However, the sites had nearly all items on our must-have list and the Board didn't want to pass up these opportunities. Change isn't easy but hopefully members will be just as impressed with the new locations and adapt to the new schedule.
Not surprisingly, the new locations mean increased rental fees for Root Cellar. The Board continues to be vigilant with the Society budget, making ongoing adjustments for such increases while being mindful of maintaining reasonable membership fees.
Please read the the following information carefully and make a note on your new 2013 calendar. Don't hesitate to contact Root Cellar at rootcellarsgs@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments. Let us know what you think!

Translation Help with ViewMate at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento
Need help with translations of historical or family documents? Consider the Viewmate program.
"An Introduction to ViewMate" will be presented at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento on Sunday, November 18, 2012 starting at 10 a.m.
Gary Sandler will talk about the award-winning ViewMate program he helped create. The program, found at www.JewishGen.org, offers free translations of old passports, postcards, gravestones, official documents and more. Sandler has been the programmer for ViewMate and will introduce its features and capabilities. It has helped thousands of people move past brick walls in their family research.
About the Speaker
Gary Sandler has been a computer guy and project planner for over 30 years. His interest in genealogy sprang from his curiosity about whether he was related to the actor Adam Sandler. He has been applying his obsessive-compulsive behaviors to researching and documenting his Russian, Lithuanian and Polish roots for over a dozen years. In 2006-07, Sandler worked with Steve Morse to create the “Gold Form” one-step tool for searching Ellis Island passenger records.
All are welcome to attend the Sunday, November 18th 10 a.m. meeting at the Albert Einstein Residence Center,1935 Wright Road, Sacramento.

November Membership Program Presents Abe Lincoln
Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society
Membership Meeting and Program
Wednesday, November 14, 2012
7:00p.m. - 8:30p.m.
Citrus Heights Community Clubhouse
6921 Sylvan Road, Citrus Heights, CA
Join us for an evening about "The Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln" presented by Arnold Kunst. Has this country ever produced a more interesting humorist than Abraham Lincoln? Have we a leader to match Lincoln’s wisdom as he shepherded this country through the depths of the Civil War, a war that was all but lost on so many occasions? Arnold Kunst, the author of the recently published ‘Lincoln 365,’ gave his first talk on Abraham Lincoln in high school and has been fascinated by him ever since. The Abraham Lincoln Arnold uncovers for us in this talk gives every appearance of walking on water; Lincoln will be glad to show us, if we but care to look closely, where the rocks are! Lincoln, always comfortable inside his own skin, shows us reasons aplenty for you and me to choose him as our role model!
About the Speaker
Arnold Kunst, who holds an MA in history from Queen's University in Northern Ireland, taught both children and adults on both sides of the Atlantic for well over 30 years. Recently retired, his students range from the children of cabinet ministers to convicted felons, from the cream of the academic crop to those some would consider the dregs of society. He brings a wide range of experience to the speaker's podium – teacher, business owner, school administrator, professional musician, free-lance journalist, grants writer, house painter, hospice volunteer.
Arnold has fine-tuned his speaking skills with Toastmasters International. His Lincoln presentations, as well as his recently-published Lincoln 365, arose out of an award-winning Toastmasters speech entitled 'Lincoln Was a Loser.' You and I should lose like Lincoln!
His most recent position, as a teacher in a California state prison, is where his fascination with Abraham Lincoln turned into a flat-out passion. He was utterly astonished to find the drug dealers and wife beaters in his class were turned to putty in Lincoln’s hands! As Arnold witnessed first-hand the astonishing effect Abraham Lincoln had on his students, he bottled that Lincoln in his recently-published book, Lincoln 365. If Lincoln could entice a sense of direction in rudderless felons, just think what he might do for the likes of you and me!

Society Saturday: Lisa B. Lee to Speak in September
| Lisa B. Lee |
On Wednesday, September 12, 2012, Lisa B. Lee will present How to Prepare a Genealogy Legacy for your Online Presence. You've heard the saying that "anything you put on the internet will be there forever". Well, have you thought about the online presence you'd like to leave after you're gone? Whether it be a blog, family tree, Website, or YouTube video, tonight's program will help you consider what steps you need to take now to ensure that the stories you've left for the world to see will continue to be there for your descendants to find them. We'll discuss where & how to leave passwords, arranging for registration & renewal fees; writing your own obituary and how and where to post it. We cannot control when we're going to die, but we may be able to ensure that our legacy endures long after we're gone.
About the Speaker
Professional genealogist, Lisa B. Lee, is owner of GotGenealogy.com, a Website designed to help genealogists make the most of their online searches. A graduate of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies (University of Toronto), she obtained her PLCGS with certificates in U.S., Canadian and Irish genealogy and methodology. Since the inception of ExpertConnect, by Ancestry.com in 2009, Ms. Lee was one of the original Experts, and conducted professional research for clients in the U.S. and Europe, until the demise of ExpertConnect in Early 2011. In addition to the Got Genealogy Gazette, dozens of her articles have been published in numerous genealogical journals and newsletters in North America.
Ms. Lee speaks and conducts workshops at genealogical societies and conferences in the U.S. and Canada where her animated style, infinite knowledge of everything internet, wit and perverted humor ensure that attendees will not only learn a lot but will have fun doing so. All of her workshops feature a free raffle where attendees can win valuable prizes, and if you ask her a genealogical question she can’t answer, you’ll win an awesome reward. Mind you, your question has to be pretty hard to stump her, especially since she’s memorized the internet by heart. If genealogy isn’t fun, then why do it? She invites you to join her on Facebook: www.facebook.com/got.genealogy? She may be contacted at Lisa@GotGenealogy.com.

Root Cellar's General Meeting
Some of the items displayed during the "Show and Tell" portion of Root Cellar's general meeting on Wednesday, February 8, 2012.
An assortment of items given to a member by a distant cousin. A connection made with Great Grandparents.
Baptism dresses that crossed several generations.
A rescued photograph of an ancestor in the mid-19th century. Computer enhancement of the tin negative seen in the lower left portion of the frame.
And, a "What is it?" found on a family farm in Minnesota. Dates from the 1920s or so, but unsure what exactly it is.

Her family maintained much of the native culture, meaning they were traditionally taught by their grandparents and elders. She is active within the Maidu/Washoe culture and involved with the Maidu Traditionalists, a group preserving the Maidu songs and traditional dances as well as preserving the knowledge of assembling regalia used in the dances.
Her cultural background enabled her to become a Chapa-De Indian Health board member. She retired from twenty-eight years of service to the Placer Hills Union School District over four years ago. One of her jobs was the Indian Education coordinator, cultural educator, resource person, and tutor for the numerous Native American students within the district. She also conducted demonstrations on Maidu culture and lecture at surrounding schools. She worked as an archaeological technician/Native American monitor in Placer County, Nevada County and Sacramento County as well as with the U.S. Forest Service. She participated with Placer County Museum system, Maidu Museum and the Coloma State Park (Gold Discovery Park) and various historical and civic groups, which included demonstrations and lectures on Maidu culture.
Recently she has been involved with the Federal Regulatory Commission re-licensing process for Pacific Gas & Electric, Nevada Irrigation District and Placer County Water Agency as a representative for the Nisenan Maidu in the service area. Along with other community folks they have developed Historical Properties and Native American Traditional Cultural properties guidelines which will assist the agencies in any sensitive areas, historical as well as aboriginal history and pre-historical issues.
Her brother, Alan Wallace, and she have been working with Sierra Native Alliance teaching the Nisenan Maidu language to interested people (youth as well). They have also been compiling family history and documenting culturally sensitive sites in their traditional homelands (Maidu & Washoe). She feels that it is her purpose and duty as a Nisenan Maidu to keep their lifeways, knowledge and language alive and to encourage others to remember who they are and help them to broaden their knowledge and take pride in their aboriginal heritage. It is also important to educate others of their rich culture and make aware that there are still Native peoples who still practice and live their culture.
