About the Speaker
Jim Rader has been teaching computerized genealogy to senior citizens and other interested students for the past ten years as a California Credentialed Adult Education Teacher. He has been a guest lecturer for genealogy groups for the past 20 years, with an extensive range of topics. Mr. Rader has researched extensively his own surname and has guided others in doing the same. He started the quarterly "RaderRamblings" which he published for ten years. During that time he also published The Second Attempt to collect ALL of the Rader, Reader, Roder, Reeder, Rotter families in Anerica 1995. Since then he has published many books, including John Henry Rotter 1732-1812, His Children and Grandchildren (2006), and Henry Rader, Died In the Civil War (2010).
Jim conducts the One Name study for the Rader surname at the Guild of One name Studies, where he completed the training in Advanced One-Name Studies Jim is also the coordinator for the Rader surname study at Family Tree DNA. Jim Rader's two websites are http://www.rader.org/ and ttp://www.jimrader.com/, which are his tools for sharing genealogy information worldwide. He is retired after working for 48 years as a civil engineer, mainframe computer, programmer, financial manger, and adult education teacher.

Root Cellar Memories – Glenda Lloyd Gardner
Last year one of our charter members and first president, Glenda Lloyd Gardner, recalled the founding of our organization. The following was purloined from the first Preserves issue I edited:
Root Cellar is celebrating its 32nd birthday this October. It seems like only yesterday that this fledgling organization was bringing its library in apple boxes to each society meeting. Librarian, Jack Bank, faithfully arrived at each meeting with his load of apple boxes filled with the growing collection on books.
In 1978 several people who took a genealogy class from Helen Campbell-Lucas at American River College wanted to see if there would be enough interest to start a genealogy society that would meet in the evening for those who worked during the day. Helen, Glenda Lloyd, Joyce Hoffman, Muriel Sather and Sue O’Dell attended that class; Helen, Glenda and Sue are still members of Root Cellar today. The organizational meeting was held in June at the Fair Oaks Library with about 40 people expressing interest in forming a society. Glenda served as the first president and has continued to serve on the Board. October was set as the birthday month.
Root Cellar started a library with a few “how-to” books. Evelyn Mumma was the first Librarian. After Evelyn, Mary Pitts became Librarian and continued until her death in 1993. During her tenure the library was housed at Casa Roble High School and later moved to Carmichael Public Library. Jan Riggs was Librarian for a short time. When more space was needed, the Library moved to the California State Archives, Secretary of State’s building in downtown Sacramento where it is currently housed. Bob Wilson and Sammie Hudgens then took over this gigantic commitment and have continued to manage the acquisition, housing and management of approximately 500 periodicals and 5,000 volumes.
Root Cellar continues to thrive and is always seeking new ways to serve the Sacramento genealogical community. Join us for this adventure of chasing our ancestors.

You're Invited! Sacramento Cemeteries - People and History Presentation
All are invited to hear William (Bill) Pettite speak at the Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society meeting.
William (Bill) Pettite was a probate judge and coroner in Idaho. He has earned many rewards for his lifelong community involvement, including the 1999 Promotion of History Award from the Sacramento County Historical Society and the National Preservation Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. One of his great accomplishments was to prepare historical information on some of the cemeteries in Sacramento County as a community service. One such endeavor was the history of East Lawn Memorial Park, located on Folsom Blvd in East Sacramento.
Come listen as Bill tells us about the cemeteries and people who are buried there, including Ancil Hoffman, Effie Yeaw, Newton Earp, military heroes, gypsies, and more.

You're Invited! Climbing Brick Walls in Roseville
All are invited to hear Glenda Gardner Lloyd speak at the Roseville Genealogical Society meeting.
Glenda Gardner Lloyd is a fourth generation Californian; she grew up on a cattle ranch in northeastern California and attended a one-room county school. She received her BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her MA from California State University, Sacramento. She taught elementary school and worked as a reading specialist for 38 years.
Genealogy is her hobby and passion. Glenda helped organized Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society and was their first president. She has taught genealogy classes through San Juan Adult Education School for the past 25 years and participates in local seminars for the California State Archives, Sacramento Regional Family Center, and Sacramento Public Library. She has lectured for the Salt Lake Institute and does workshops for many local societies.

Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society will host Linda Johnson, Senior Archivist at the California State Archives. Linda will describe the many types of county records held at the Archives and answer audience questions. Please come and bring a friend to hear about county resources in an unexpected place.
Linda began her own family history search in 1988 when enrolled in an undergraduate class at CSU, Sacramento. She went on to receive her Master of Arts degree in Public History in 1993. As a graduate student, she interned at the California State Archives for three years and at the San Joaquin County Historical Society for 6 months. After graduation, she worked as assistant archivist at the Center for Sacramento History followed by collections manager for the manuscript and archival collections at Shields Library, UC Davis.
In October 1997, Linda accepted a position at the California State Archives, where she has worked in a variety of program areas. She is currently the Reference Coordinator and has responsibility for all activities related to the Reference Program. Linda has participated in the annual Family History Day since its inception in 1999 and will be a speaker this year. In addition to the Family History Day engagements, she has been a presenter at several local genealogical and historical societies.

She is also a writer for and the current editor of the Roseville Genealogical Society's newsletter. She has been teaching beginning, intermediate, and research genealogy classes as well as PowerPoint classes for the past 5 years. Always looking for ways to use technology in genealogy research, she recently finished taking a 6 week course on how to use social media in genealogy research.

Roseville Genealogical Society presents "Saloon Culture in Antebellum Sacramento"

The Roseville Genealogical Society will meet on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 from 1 pm - 3 pm at the Maidu Senior Center, 1550 Maidu Dr., Roseville, California.
The program will be "Saloon Culture in Antebellum Sacramento". Join Sacramento Public Library librarian and historian James C. Scott as he leads a visual and anecdotal journey through the saloons of pre-Civil War Sacramento. The El Dorado, Mansion House, Arcade, Bull's Head, Round Tent, Magnolia, Humboldt, and Lee's Exchange all stood as venues for theater going, political rallying, sleeping, eating, voting, dueling, killing, drinking and gaming. James will relay the tales, characters, and events that made the saloon the epicenter of so much of what mattered during the city's antebellum history.
James is a graduate of Marquette University and has a Masters degree in History and a Masters degree in Library and Information Science. He has co-authored three books on Sacramento, including Mather Field, Alkali Flat and historic photos of Sacramento. James currently serves as Information Services Librarian at the Sacramento Public Library, Central Branch.
