Good Day to everyone.......   this was a great day and turned into an exciting evening. WIN WIN!

The morning sessions I choose were all "Genealogy Society Development Workshops"

My favorite one was of course the first one which I am still waking up for. It was titled "DIY: WDYTYA" Who Do You Think You Are?  Yes, you are right. It was a take off on the TV show Who
Do Think You Are?  Connie Moretti and Lisa Schmacher put together this program for the genealogy community and especially for the non-genealogy community. As a contribution to the City of Torrance Centennial Celebration, the South Bay Cities Genealogical Society presented a program based on the popular WDYTYA" with permission. They showed a slideshow of the completed program. They choose 3 leaders in their community, researched their ancestry, put together a scrapbook and DVD for each person. You can see some of the production through the pictures below. It was a formal event, held in a downtown community theater, reception before and after. A lot of work and it paid off for them.

The second society session was with Daniel Horowitz (MyHeritage) "Crowdsourcing: when the power of many benefits all. " By definition, crowdsourcing is a process that involves outsourcing tasks to an undefined group of people. This process can occur both online and offline. The idea is to not only to split the work among various people, but to also take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of each of the individuals for the benefit of the entire group.  Example: Wikipedia- group of individuals started to place their information on a common place accessible to the entire world. Another example: FamilySearch with the 1940 U.S. Census indexing project and other indexing projects.

 

 

AND the third Society offering "Double Your Membership, Double Your Fun: the UGA Case Study
with Janet Hovorka (owner of Family Chart Masters) outgoing President of the Utah Genealogical Society. A lot of great suggestions and super discussions between society leaders.

Friday Night Special Event - Alexandra Orton, members of the WDYTYA team. Behind the Scenes at "Who Do You Think You Are? Q&A session; Moderator Lisa Louise Cooke. The room was full for this event. People are curious about the behind the scenes activities, how they pick the characters, their research activity, how were the celebs to work with, were they coaxed, was their a script and much more. It was just an evening of two women on the stage being interviewed by Lisa Louise Cook and with lots of questions from the audience.

DNA and Genetic Genealogy Conference – Event

Announcing the Inaugural DNA and Genetic Genealogy Conference Sponsored by ISOGG and SCGS: To Be Held in Conjunction with the SCGS Genealogy Jamboree 
I am so excited to finally be able to share the following news: 
DNA and Genetic Genealogy Conference Jan 4, 2012 - The International Society of Genetic Genealogy and the Southern California Genealogical Society announce an innovative, important one-day DNA conference, “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013,” to be held June 6, 2013, in conjunction with the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree. 
The featured speaker is Dr. Spencer Wells of the National Geographic Genographic Project, who will review the Genographic Project 2.0. Other speakers presenting state-of-the-art uses of DNA in the search for ancestors include The Genetic Genealogist Blaine Bettinger; Dr. Tim Janzen; The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell; Your Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore; DNA Testing Adviser Richard Hill; and Katherine Borges, the director of ISOGG. Also participating in the day-long seminar will be representatives from the major commercial DNA organizations – Family Tree DNA, 23andMe and AncestryDNA. Separate tracks will be targeted for beginners and advanced genetic genealogists. 
One-on-one consultations will be available during the final hour of the day. Help is available to interpret results and to use the various testing organization websites and resources. This personal assistance will help even the most inexperienced family historians apply genetic genealogy as another tool in their research toolbox. 
What makes this event so special? “This is the very first genetic genealogy conference that is independently produced by societies such as ISOGG and SCGS,” explained CeCe Moore, the conference co-chair. “I have dreamed of an ISOGG-sponsored genetic genealogy conference for a long time, and I am thrilled to be working in cooperation with the SCGS Jamboree on this inaugural event. Holding the conference in conjunction with the Genealogy Jamboree helps us reach many family historians who would otherwise not be able to attend.” 
“We are so excited about breaking new ground in genetic genealogy gatherings,” said SCGS president Alice Fairhurst, who also leads the society’s DNA interest group and has been actively applying DNA in her own genealogy research. “As more family historians have DNA tests, genetic genealogy is becoming more valuable in the search for ancestors and living relatives.” 
Registration for “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” and the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree opens on Friday, January 4, 2013. The conference will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA. The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will also be held at the Burbank Marriott on June 7-9, 2013.

Tuesday's Tips - Things To Do

RESEARCH TRIP - Our neighbors to the west at the California Genealogical Society (CGS) in Oakland are sponsoring a research trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City from April 22 – 29, 2012.  A peek under the curtain showed that details are being finalized.  This sounds like a great opportunity! Watch for information about this trip to be published soon on the CGS website!

JAMBOREE TIME -  Our neighbors in the Southland just announced that registration for the Jamboree is now open.  The press release says in part:

The center of the genealogical world will move to Burbank in June as the Southern California Genealogical Society opens the doors to the 43rd Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree.  The popular conference will be held at the home of Jamboree, Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, California, from Friday through Sunday, June 8 through the 10th. Pre-events Family History Writers Conference and Tech-Trax will be held on Thursday, June 7.
We expect to welcome about 1700 attendees, speakers, exhibitors, and volunteers to the Marriott. Our attendance makes Jamboree one of the most popular genealogical events in the United States.  Go to the Jamboree website to get the details on registration (both online and by mail), speakers, schedule, hotel reservations, maps and directions, local resources and sights, and those all-important FAQs. Linda's personal research involves New England records. She also specializes in methods for finding elusive ancestors--those mighty brick walls. She is an associate of the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG), holding credentials as a Certified Genealogist(sm) and as a Certified Genealogical Lecturer(sm). She is a former trustee and a former editor of the BCG newsletter, OnBoard.

The Jamboree Extension Series allows genealogists from around the world to take advantage of the types of sessions that are offered at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree in Burbank, CA. Jamboree - Last Day

 The June Gloom weather had a strong foothold on the area this morning.  There was a light mist which lasted so long that the Marriott staff set-up the lunch buffet inside the conference center.  Yet Murphy's Law ruled, and by the 11:30 break for lunch, they had relocated everything outside.  The mist cleared but the sun was shy until later in the afternoon.

 Today's class schedule included English, Scottish and Welsh research; using the iPad and iPhone for genealogy; collateral research; and funeral home and cemetery research.  Toss in a little help at Blogger Island and one last round-about through the exhibit hall and we called it a day. 

We thank the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree Committee led by Paula and Leo, all the volunteers and the Marriott staff for their hospitality.

We also thank Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers for organizing and www.Geni.com for arranging for and sponsoring the Blogger Welcome Bags and the ice cream social.

A special tip of the cap goes to Lynn Parmenter and "I'm sorry I forgot her name", the SCGS Volunteer Coordinator, who were caught in the act of kindness which was appreciated.

I have been well-fed at the hotel restaurant, across the street at less expensive cafes and an ice cream shoppe. 

Bloggers were welcomed at an ice cream social organized by Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers and sponsored by Geni.com.  I can report that no Root Cellar member wore a grass skirt on their head or otherwise...oops I forgot, what happens at Jamboree, stays at Jamboree.

Jamboree Eve Eve

From nearby beautiful downtown Burbank, California, it's the day before the day before the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Jamboree 2011.  Today, my husband Scott and I spent all afternoon at the SCGS Library.  The night before, I made a list of the books to look at by cutting and pasting them from the SCGS Library online catalog.  My focus was on Southern California (native I am), Nebraska and Ohio.  Needless to say, it was an ambitious list.  I only finished combing through four books, all about Highland County, Ohio. My target surnames were Brown and Clark but  I also came across many VanPelts and Swearingens.  Good finds.

 As you can see, I was well-equipped with portable scanner, mobile hotspot, camera, computer and Root Cellar business cards.  I also left a batch of flyers for Family History Day at the California State Archives.  What did my husband do?  He read an audio book about John Adams.

...Our favorite feature: the calendar. We just review the lecture sessions including breakfasts and banquets, decide if that's one we want to attend, click on the star and Voila!, the session is added to our personal calendar. Going from session to session will be so easy this year. Way Cool! And yes, we would like to win the Favorite Feature Contest!

Probably the highlight of the app is the ability to see the information on all of the events in the conference and create your personal schedule.
