FGS Announces Two Free Genealogy Webinars

The Federation of Genealogical Societies announces two new webinars focusing on the use of military records in genealogical research.  These webinars are FREE and open to the public!

Discovering Local & State Militia Records

From annual muster to supplies and appointment of Officers, learn how these records may be used in your family research. Learn more about the military organization of citizens called for the purpose of local defense, who served this country from the Revolution through 1812 and on to the development of the National Guard.

A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than twenty-eight years, he specializes in the records of the National Archives, especially those that relate to the military. Free 1940 Census Webinar - Limited Time Only

Legacy Family Tree announced today that its recent webinar "Navigating the 1940 U.S. Census" by Thomas MacEntee is now available for free online. The announcement stated in part:

Want to Learn More About the 1940 US Federal Census?

There is going to be a lot of learning opportunities for all of us with the coming release of  the 1940 US Federal Census. It will be released on 2 April 2012.

I see all types of classes, sessions, workshops and webinars dedicated to teaching us about this census and how you can help in the indexing to really make it easier for ALL of us to locate our ancestors. Some of you will be looking for yourself - YIPPEE!!! and some of us will be waiting for the 1950 US Federal Census to find ourselves. OH MY!!

One the first ones for you to take advantage of is a "Webinar" (online class session) sponsored by the Friends of the National Archives, Southeast Region called "Introduction to the 1940 Federal Census"

Monday, January 9, 2012  at 7-8pm EST or 4-5pm PST right in front of your own computer online. (YES!!  this is very timely, it is this coming Monday)

 Register Here   you do need to register, it is free. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to click on when it is time. I would suggest going on 10-15 minutes earlier. The link with your confirmation will take you to the 1940 census webinar. Remember, it will be at 4pm Pacific Time NOT 7pm Eastern Time.

Speaker: Constance Potter, staff archivist and genealogy specialist, will talk about the questions on the 1940 census emphasizing the new questions including the supplemental schedule.

Although she specializes in Georgia's state and county records prior to 1900 and a variety of federal records, particularly of the southeast region of the United States, she has extensive experience in many other geographic regions of the United States.

She is an associate of the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG), holding credentials as a Certified Genealogist(sm) and as a Certified Genealogical Lecturer(sm). Genealogy Education the Easy Way - Legacy Family Tree Webinars

If you have not heard of the webinars that Legacy Family Tree posts online for your education, you need to be brought up to date. This link: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/webinars.asp, will take you to their webinar page. While, as might be expected, the slant is toward Legacy Family Tree software, the webinars that are produced are of benefit for all levels of genealogists. You can register to be part of a live webinar, or listen to an archived webinar. It is generally the practice of Legacy to post the archived version for usually 10 days. After that, the webinar is available for purchase on a CD for personal or society use.
Some of the upcoming webinars are "Is My Pet Frog Part of My Family", Children and Genealogy in the Classroom (December 14), Digital Books and Sites for Genealogists (January 4), Pilgrims and Patriots: Discovering Your Massachusetts Ancestors (January 18), Ten Brick Wall Tips for Beginners (February 15) and Are You Ready for the 1940 U. Keeping with the theme of "Sorting Saturday," one in particular might be of interest for those of us who are burden with stacks and stacks of research information. The webinar was originally produced on November 4, 2011 and entitled "FamilyRoots Organizer System." The presenter was Mary Hill who declared the system "easy to understand, simple to set up, and simple to use." The presentation lasted for roughly an hour and a half, and presents a variety of methods for a paper filing system. So if you are searching for a system, be sure to check out these suggestions, one might work for you.
