Sacramento Family Search Library Announces November Seminar

The Sacramento Family Search Library (aka Sacramento Family History Center) presents Family: Eternal Keepsakes, a Family History Seminar on November 3, 2012 at the LDS Church, 2745 Eastern Avenue, Sacramento, CA from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm.

This year a free electronic version of the syllabus will be offered.  You will receive the download version approximately two weeks before the seminar.  You can print all of it (or select classes) at home if you like.  If you still want a complete paper syllabus, you may order it during the pre-registration process.

Come learn all about using newspaper records, with emphasis on how to identify and access the newspapers you need.

7pm - Pamela Dallas
Social Security - Get the most out of the social security records. Learn who was eligible and when, the changes in the law and why it matters to your research.

Italian Research - A brief outline of Italian political jurisdictions and timeline of Italian history, types of records, where to find them and how to read them.

Using Dropbox for Genealogy and More

Sacramento Family History Center Creates Genealogy Community Forums

Last Fall our local Family History Center launched their new website. That new website includes a genealogy community forum where you can post messages, questions, and replies. Entries can be read by the public. But to post something, you must first create an id and password there. Currently there is only one public forum -- General Discussion. No doubt additional ones will be created if there is sufficient interest.

Tuesday Tips: Family History Centers - Online Ordering of Microfilm starts NOW

On FamilySearch.org you will find a complete section devoted to "Online ordering and payment of microfilm and microfiche" A service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"Like all new endeavors, the move to Online Film Ordering has not been without it's bumps.  (Personally, we are always a bit skeptical of the promises made when they seem too good to be true.)  However, with a couple of major issues yet to be overcome, it has been a normal transition like anything new.  The system is very automated and also very slow.  That may be due to the high volume of users now on it.  The other issue is in the patron notification.  In a perfect world, the patron would be notified by email when their order ships and when it is received in the Center.  Right now that feature is attracting all our resources to get it to work correctly.  We believe perfection is possible...it just takes a bit longer than expected.  Soon we will look back on this time and give thanks because it works properly every time.Oh the joy of perfection.

Online Ordering to Begin at the Sacramento Family History Center

The following announcement was received today from the Sacramento Regional Family History Center:

The On-Line Film Ordering Process begins JULY 27TH!

We have been advised that the date for ON-LINE FILM ORDERING has been moved up.  Effective July 27th, our Family History Center will no longer be taking film orders.  All orders for films and microfiche will be handled on-line in the comfort of your own home.

July 2011 Newsletter: The Sacramento Regional Family History Center

I just received the July 2011 newsletter from the Sacramento Regional Family History Center (SRFHC).  How convenient that it comes directly to my inbox.

On-Line Film Ordering Process begins AUGUST 2nd
There has been a change in the implementation date for ON-LINE FILM ORDERING. Our Family History Center is scheduled to start the on-line film ordering process on August 2nd.  Patron training classes are scheduled at the Family History Center as follows:

• Tuesday, July 19th at 10am & 2pm in the Relief Society Room
• Thursday, July 21th at 10am & 2pm in the Relief Society Room

Patrons are welcome to attend either class.  If you are unable to attend a training class at the Family History Center, you may print a handout and view a demonstration for ON-LINE FILM ORDERING.  Click on the following link: On-Line Film Ordering.

Family History Summer 'Walk-In' Public Classes
FamilySearch has provided many, many sources for training. Beginning Tuesday, July 19th the SRFHC will show a video class from the Research Online Training Courses that may be found at FamilySearch.org. 

The classes will be held in the Relief Society Room (public class location) and open for 'walk-ins' on Tuesday and Thursday of each week at 1pm.  Class handouts will be available for those who attend. The schedule of classes for the next 4 weeks is as follows:

• July 19 & 21 at 1pm: Basic U.S. Military Records - 25 min.
• July 26 & 28 at 1pm: Military Records- Civil War - 35 min.
• Aug 2 & 4 at 1pm: Revolutionary War Research - 43 min.
• Aug 9 & 11th at 1pm: WWI Draft Cards & More - 41 min.

German Ancestry Assistance

The Sacramento German Genealogical Society provides research assistance with tracing German ancestors every Thursday from 1:00pm-5:00pm in the Center.
