Society Saturday - Documentation Demo Series

"Where did I squirrel
away that record?.

Genealogy without documentation is mythology.

This phrase appears frequently in articles, lectures and on tote bags.  It would be nice to know who to credit for this insight but it's a mystery to me.  But true it is.  We look everywhere for evidence of an ancestor's date or place of birth, marriage, immigration, etc.  We record when, where, how, and from whom the information came, even if it wasn't found.  (Just say yes to this.)  Where and how your information is recorded will make your continued research much easier and more efficient.  This is where your genealogy software program comes in handy.  Oh, you don't use a program?  Let this series help you select a program that suits your needs.

Beginning in July 2013, Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society (RCSGS) will begin a series on Documentation - How to Enter information into a Genealogy Software Program.  During the regular monthly Workshop over the next four months, RCSGS members will demonstrate how documentation is entered into the genealogy software programs by RootsMagic, Legacy Family Tree, Family Tree Maker and Reunion for the Mac.  Other software programs exist but the programs slated for demonstration tend to be the most commonly used.

Please join us for this informative series.  There's something to be learned about documentation from each program.  As usual, your successful finds or brickwalls will be discussed at the beginning of each workshop.  Visitors are welcome at each session.

Root Cellar's May 15 Workshop Meeting

Chaired by Root Cellar President John Jay, the meeting started with John scheduling mini-presentations on source documentation support by genealogy database programs. One per meeting will be presented by volunteers over the next several months. A presentation on Flip-Pay will also be done. The remainder of the meeting was an open forum for questions, announcements and discussions. Topics included Lulu.com, poster-sized pedigree charts, DNA matching, Heritage Quest, "Family Tree" on HBO, some brick walls and the hazards of walking in a rural Pennsylvania cemetery. The person planning that trek received warnings about ticks and chiggers along with solutions involving wearing dog flea collars and putting cone collars around the ankles.

This Workshop is a small-group meeting of the Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society. It meets 1 to 3 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at Sylvan Community Center, 7521 Community Drive, Citrus Heights, California. It is a self-help group that addresses a wide variety of topics and frequently includes mini-presentations. Attendees are invited to describe their recent discoveries, successes and to seek help with their brick walls. The group leader is Root Cellar President John Jay. Wordless Wednesday - Workshop Wednesday

Tombstone Tuesday– Finding Sacramento Area Cemeteries

At workshop meetings of the Root Cellar Sacramento German Genealogical Society, the opening question/answer/discussion session can lead in any direction. At the March 20 meeting, it led to the now gone New Helvetia Cemetery with the question being where did all the residents go. Several attendees provided helpful tips and information. But if you cannot attend the workshop meeting, is there somewhere else to obtain information on local cemeteries and find out what became of the missing ones?

One source is the website of the California GenWeb Project. Specifically, its Sacramento County website. To see a list of local cemetery resources posted there, go to:

Almost all the listed entities have websites and some include online searchable databases. It also includes a summary listing of over 150 cemeteries. And there is a page dedicated to the New Helvetica cemetery. As of the date the blog was authored (March 21), the URL on that website for the Sacramento County Cemetery Advisory Commission is wrong. Correct one is:

I emailed the correction to the webmaster for the Sacramento CAGenWeb website and she replied back the same day saying Sacramento County has changed the URL for that page a number of times over the past year or two. So if you bookmark this county coroner page, be prepared to find it again.

She also wants to make this page the go-to place for finding local cemetery information. So if you have any corrections, updates, missing information or lists of graves, please send them to her. The website contains a contact form.

Oh yes. The answer to the question as to where the residents of New Helvetica where relocated follows.

Glenda is a fourth generation California; she grew up on a cattle ranch in north eastern California and attended a one-room county school. She received her BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her MA from California State University, Sacramento. She taught elementary school and worked as a reading specialist for 38 years.

Genealogy is her hobby and passion. Glenda helped organize Root Cellar Genealogical Society in Sacramento and was their first president. She has taught genealogy classes through San Juan Adult Education for the past 25 years and participates in local seminars for the California State Archives, Region Family Center, and Sacramento City Library. She has lectured for the Salt Lake institute and does workshops for many local societies.

April Genealogy Workshop

Here is a photo of Root Cellar's Workshop Chair John Jay conducting the April workshop. We discussed the ins and outs of Rootsweb.com. Guiding us was Glenda Gardner Lloyd. And as usual, opinions were given to help with Brick Walls.


On the 18th of May (1:00 to 3:00 pm), we will have a presentation from Sandy Benward titled "New Family Search"  and will cover the changes and "How To's" regarding the FamilySearch.org website.  Ron Setzer will be demonstrating a photographic tool for capturing your artifacts and heirlooms called "PhotoStudio in a Box."   

If anyone has a "brick wall" issue that they would like to bring to the group, please let John Jay know.
