No pressures, No stress, No shopping for gifts, you can even purchase an entire holdiay dinner which can give you more time OUT of the kitchen and time with everyone else.
I am very thankful.

Thankful Thursday - What has made Family Research So Popular?

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

What has made Family Research/ Genealogy
so Popular and Explode in Popularity??

Here are some ideas to think about and to explore if you have not

... with the exposure of genealogy through the Internet, websites devoted to genealogy, renewed commitments from local Genealogy Societies around the country, updating and renewed committment of National Genealogical Societies (ie: NGS & FGS) and active State Genealogical Societies, plus exposing the process & the excitment of uncovering a new generation of ancestors, crumbling a brickwall, finding that one elusive document through the magic of many different television shows. As genealogists we know what can be done and not be done but nothing does it like national exposure on television- that gets people excited to start or continue their own family trees.

The Internet- what is there left to say. It seem to come out of no where and grow so quickly that it is hard to keep up with all the technology. Now we are disconnecting from the wires and going mobile in almost every part of our lives. Just the use of computers to laptops to notebooks and now ipads and mini ipads and now the same thing has happened to the ever popular telephone on the wall, rotary dialing - not anymore - they are wireless, connected to the internet, mobile with gps capability and you use them for more than just communications between friends and family.

Ancestryit has grown from a small company to this huge colllection of genealogy related company's - it is a paid website with billions of pieces of information. Under Ancestry.com you will see Fold3 (military records), MyCanvas (publishing), Archives.com, RootsWeb (free, run by volunteers- newly hosted by Ancestry.com), ProGenealogists, Newspaper.com, MyFamily.com. 1000 memories, Shoebox for Ancestry (app for scanning), AncestryDNA, Mundia, Genealogy.com, Family Tree Maker Genealogy Software, and now Find-a-Grave.  With a competitive edge, Ancestry has set about to scan very large collections of family information from around the world. It has opened our eyes to how much they do have to offer, plus you can build an on-line family tree, attach documents to it, share it with others or keep it private.

ROOTS WEB - is a very old website, still free, run by all volunteers and is not owned but it is hosted by Ancestry.com. Old or maybe just established is well worth your time.  Mailing lists, forums, great help areas.

FamilySearch - is a very old group for all of us to go and research, now online and still in person at local centers, and in Salt Lake City Library. They have truly stepped into the 21st century, updated their own technology and began scanning documents, records and databases all over the world. They have pulled out most of the books in their centers and began scanning them so they will be available to all. Most of their centers have been updated with more and faster internet connection and computers. Lots of training and classes, SIG's taking place each week around the country. They have at least one local conference a year. If you have been to Salt Lake City Utah to do some research you know how awesome and overwhelming it can be.

Faces of America - What made America? What makes us? These two questions are at the heart of the  PBS series Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The Harvard scholar turns to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans — professor and poet Elizabeth Alexander, chef Mario Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, journalist Malcolm Gladwell, actress Eva Longoria, musician Yo-Yo Ma, director Mike Nichols, Her Majesty Queen Noor, television host/heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, actress Meryl Streep, and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi

Finding Your Roots- The basic drive to discover who we are and where we come from is at the core of the new 10-part PBS series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the 12th series from Professor Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. Filmed on location across the United States.

Who Do You Think You Are? -  is an American genealogy documentary series that premiered on NBC on March 5, 2010. The show is an adaptation of the British series of the same name, aired by the BBC Each week a celebrity goes on a journey to trace his or her family tree. Lisa Kudrow is an executive producer for the series, which is a partnership between Shed Media, NBC Entertainment and Ancestry.com.
The series ran for twenty-seven episodes, broadcast over three seasons, before it was cancelled by NBC in 2012. The series has since been picked up by TLC. The fourth season premiered on July 23, 2013. A how-to companion book to the series, also called Who Do You Think You Are?, is available to help viewers research their own roots.  TLC has since renewed the series for a ten-episode fifth season that will air in 2014.

Genealogy Roadshow- Part detective story, part emotional journey, Genealogy Roadshow will combine history and science to uncover the fascinating stories of diverse Americans. Each individual’s past will link to a larger community history, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of America.

Wishful Wednesday - The Emigrant & Immigration

Editor's note: Today's post was posted by Sandra Gardner-Benward  and written by Carolee Jones - Thank You.

The Emigrant and Immigration

NOTE: the statue shows the wife and child left behind at home while the father races to his new destiny in a new country.

Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Pier 21 was the port of entry for many Canadian emigrants.  Currently, cruise ships disembark passengers through the doors of the Pier 21 Museum dedicated to the history of Halifax and its emigrant population.

Pier 21, a former ocean liner terminal, is Canada's National Museum of Immigration in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It operated as an ocean liner terminal and immigration shed from 1928 to 1971. It became an immigration museum in 1999

                                                            Canadian Museum of Immigration

Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 - database
includes Ship Arrival Database and Ship Images

Unfortunately, due to time travel constraints my traveling companions and I were unable to tour the museum.  I was able to purchase two postcards showing newly arriving emigrants to Halifax.  They were on display at the Fair Oaks Library.  The library display was dedicated to immigration and emigrants.  On display was a large trunk, satchel, copies of the ticket punched by a physician attesting to the good health of the ship’s passengers and pictures of ships, including the Mayflower.  Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society members use library displays to promote genealogy and Family History Day especially during the month of September and October.

Like the United States the emigrants coming by ship to Canada were seeking a new life and the opportunities available to people willing to work hard.  On September 19, 2013 Halifax unveiled a new piece of art dedicated to the Canadian emigrants.  Entitled “The Emigrant” with the following explanation,

“The pain of separation he overcame,

with faith and hope his heart aflame…”

Travel Tuesday - Root Cellar SGS Members Sited at Ancestry Day in San Francisco

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

Vicki Contente, Chris Highsmith and Sandra Gardner-Benward
Siting of Root Cellar SGS members attending Ancestry Day in San Francisco November 9, 2013

This year, unlike last year, the conference was all held in one room with all paricipants attending.
Conference again at Hyatt Regency Hotel. Check in started at 7:30am and the first session started at 8:30am. Chris and I started our day at 5am (so that means I got up around 3:15am and don't know about Chris),  driving down to Walnut Creek and catching the BART into San Francisco. The exit is right below the Hyatt Regency Hotel. YEA!! Now Vicki was the smart one and drove down the day before and stayed overnight - smart girl)

WOW, the weather was beautiful - imagine - it is November in San Francisco AND we ate lunch outside. Yes outside in November in San Francisco! The sun was out and it was very comfortable. The street faire was also going on so we had lots to do and see during the lunch bhreak.

This was a sold out event. 1200 tickets sold about 1150 attended.  Well organized, and well staffed. Both Ancestry and California Genealogical Society partnered again and both were winners.

BEFORE

                                                                      AND DURING

The presenters were Crista Cowan (Barefoot Genealogist Blog) employed with Ancestry;
Anne Gillespie Mitchell (Finding Forgotten Stories Blog)also writes the Ancestry Anne column for member monthly newsletter/ Senior Product Mamger at Ancestry and Tim Cox (California Genealogical Society  member volunteer, speaker, teacher and all around good guy).

We listened to

ANCESTRY 101 - New & Review. Start with yourseld and work back one generation at a time. (hummm where have I heard that before and yet alot of people insist on starting with a "famous ancestor" and working forward to connect. It is so much more difficult to do that, why, start with yourself and work back. Collect all the records you can about a person or family before moving to the next generation. Use the Card Catalogue. Start an online tree. My favorite is visit the Learning Center to watch webinars, read articles, and learn more about their programs, wiki etc. GVisit Ancestry.com YouTube channel for hours of tutorials on many different topics.

SMART SEARCH TIPS & TRICKS-  Make sure you are using the Advanced search form.  Do not mark anything exact the first time you search. (I really want to emphasize this- how do you know how something is listed on any document- don't loose out by only doing an exact search of name or dates or any other)

SEARCHING & WRITING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY- Build a framework - start with census, create a timeline, think about historical events, analyze as you go. Publish as you go. Storing your story in your tree and/or blogging your stories, use social media to get your stories out there. Preserve and share the stories for your younger generations.

FIVE NEW THINGS TO TRY ON ANCESTRY.COM - 1-FAMILY TREES/ build a puplic tree on Ancestry.com IT IS FREE --- 2-Use the LEARNING CENTER, hundreds of hours of video tutorials, research guides and more.  3-COLLABORATE  update you public profile, use member directory to find others researching the same surnames & locations. 4 &5-DNA there is ethnicity & cousin matching. They are two different processes.  ok  there is ydna/.males only; mtdna./ everyone has it but only passed on by women; AncestryDNA (autosomalDNA) anyone can take this test and benefit. --- have a public tree on Ancestry.com, attach your DNA results to your tree, have multiple family members tested, send messages to matches, and respond to messages received.

GET TO KNOW OUR FAMILY TO DISCOVER EVEN MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN-  Did you know that the parent company is ANCESTRY.COM and under their umbrella is Ancestry.com; AncestryDNA; FOLD3; Family Tree Maker Genealogical Family Software; MyCanvas (preserve & share family stories)' Archives.com; RootsWeb  (free, run by volunteers & hosted by Ancestry.com); Pro Genealogist; Newspaper.com; MyFamily.com; 1000 Memories; Shoebox for Ancestry (free- app for scanning); Mundia; Genealogy.com; & Find-a-Grave  just purchased (mobile app coming)

PUTTING YOUR ANCESTORS IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: EXTRACTING STORIES FROM MILITARY RECORDS ON ANCESTRY.COM & FOLD3 --determine who in your family might have served. Create your research plan

THE INTERNET IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG-- most research is done in libraries, archives, courthouses, cemeteries and other places. GOOD side of Internet is that it is a huge resource & it is open 24 hours. The BAD side is transcription errors, incomplete record sets. The UGLY side is the integrity of the information, name collectors, making it fit.

LIVE Q&A PANEL...... lots of questions came in with registration, and some more from the floor.

There were prize drawings all day long with the grand prize drawn at the end of the day. You didn't hear any hooping and hollaring from me, Vicki or Chris, but there were winners AND great prizes.

A personal thought: There are lots of great advantages of using Family Tree Maker if you use Ancestry.com and create a family tree online. I used FTM years ago and enjoyed it. Then along came Legacy and I switched. I am very happy with Legacy but am a little jealous of how FTM & Ancestry Trees sync.

Wordless Wednesday - Another Siting of a Root Cellar Member on the East Coast

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward (pictures from Lois Shumaker)

AND here we are again, traveling with Root Cellar SGS member Lois Shumaker and visiting the New England Historic Genealogical Society

Lois says, " NEHGS, of course, is a huge library and holds large collections of historical records, books, microfilms, and vertical files.  Things are easy to locate, and the staff is exceedingly kind and helpful.  They are also very liberal with their rules -- free coffee in the snack room, and no requirement to put your personal belongings in a locker unless you wish.  A very comfortable place to work."

......and again more support for Root Cellar SGS with our t-shirt traveling the east coast. Thanks Lois.
