Thankful Thursday......... for the Learning Opportunities

How many of you not able to make the Richmond, Virginia NGS Conference in May, took advantage of the LIVE Streaming sessions being offered.........??         I did! 

What a great opportunity to take sessions from exceptional professional genealogist. Don't think that many of our society's could afford to pay for some of these wonderful presenters to come for a one day conference. Take advantage of these opportunity's when possible. The cost for these types of sessions are far less costly than actually being there in person.........  

Going forward: I have been slowly working my way through the National Genealogical Society's (NGS) live streaming sessions ($) offered from the NGS Conference in Virginia last month. I was not home when the sessions were LIVE STREAMING - [so does that mean they are 'dead streaming' now. NO! but I couldn't resist it.]  Fortunately,  I have 3 months to watch and listen to them as many times as I want. Better be careful though, one month is already gone and before you know it August will be here and they will no longer be available. Such a great opportunity. Here are the sessions in the Track 1 that I purchased.

& tricks. This should be a very good offering for all members.

SECOND.......  Jim Rader, a member & professional speaker, has graciously consented to share his experience with us on DNA. He has put together a special 3 part series on DNA. Come and get your questions answered, no really, get those questions you have answered. Learn the how, what, where
and why of DNA testing and what comes next after testing.

Jim has scheduled a 3-part series, each an hour, at the June 18th workshop, July 16th workshop, & August 20th workshop.


Two great presentations to look forward too. So be sure to mark your calendars for the June 18th Workshop. Be prepared to learn, be prepared to interact, be prepared to help and support others that come.

I am very excited. I hope to see you there. Come early for a good seat.

Society Saturday.......... AND it Begins all over AGAIN!!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE.......... We are very proud to introduce to you Root Cellar SGS's New 2014-2015 Officers. They were elected in May and installed in June..........  and took office immediately....  

CONGRATULATIONS!!



John Jay, Immediate Past President- far right has the responsibility of installing the new officers and install he did. Communication being one of the best tools we have to offer our membership, John wanted to make sure that this group was given an advantage of talking to each other no matter what the technology and so he spared no expense and purchased the latest and greatest communication antenni for each officer.

Way back in January 1964 Southern California Genealogical Society opened its doors.........  so on Sunday - the last day of the JAMBOREE - we all went to our classes, ate lunch and visited the exhibitors as these groovy chicks and cool dudes .........  I LOVE IT!! Talented Tuesday - Online Newspapers - Good Research Resource?

to learn all about Subscription Newsletters Online. Learn about other programs.

Members enjoy a pre-meeting gathering starting from 6:15pm for open discussion. Share tips, information, problems and solutions with people researching in the same regions. There are table tents available to pick up as you sign in.  There are all sorts of topics for you to choose from and then place it on your table and let others join you that are interested in that topic.

General meeting begins at 7pm. We welcome & introduce our guests and first time members. Society and member announcements are next. Then on to the Topic for the evening...........  we generally adjourn between 8-8:30pm.

AND the topic is Online Newspapers:
Newspapers can provide information about births, deaths, marriages, moves, business, naturalizations, court cases, and more. The Family History Library (FHL) Portal at the FamilySearch Centers and Libraries provides free access to several newspaper subscription sites. This class gives an overview of what is available and techniques to help improve your chances of finding information about your relatives.

Black Sheep Sunday - JAMBOREE 2014 Learning for the Mind, Body and Soul

Another day of classes, another round of learning more and trying to apply it to my own
research.......... here is a sample of the classes I took today.

1-Using America's Ethnic Newspapers to Find and Document Your Family with Gena Philibert Ortega......... Excellent

2-The Scoop on Newspapers.com with Peter Drinkwater......... Excellent. Did you know that they are owned by Ancestry.com? Yep!

3-The Full Scoop of Civil Registration Records of the United Kingdom and Ireland with Kathy Warburton......... Excellent.

I almost forget about the Exhibit Hall ...... it is open and going strong. Lots of good things to see. I have purchased 3 Family Finder Kits from FamilyTree DNA- good discount..... I am really sorry to hear that AncestryDNA will not be continuing with their Y-dna and  mt-dna testing- only Autosomal will be available. But they also have a good Autosomal database so   I purchased my autosomal kit from them. I am so surprised though. I talked with Ancestry staff and it was just a business decision- Y or mtDNA kits being not being sold so they just made the decision to discontinue.Members will be given a time frame to download their numbers and transfer it to another company such as FamilyTreeDNA or 23andMe or somewhere else.

4- Mind Mapping Your Research Plans and Results with Thomas McEntee...........  this afternoon started off a little rocky for Thomas..... technical problems and the IT's were called and they came in from everywhere. As the old joke goes, How many tech's does it take to ............. ?
Well they had Thomas up and running in no time. While they were working on the problem, Thomas just carried on with Q&A. He was cool, calm and professional. It happens and life goes on. Lots of questions and curiosity about this 'new' idea called MIND MAPPING. Not so new but sort of new to most of us. It is a different way, a mashup of brainstorming and doing the old fashion outline - you know how you learned to outline a book or a story in school. It was a very interesting hour, a  very well worth hour. I think I am going to try to incorporate this into my research. Thanks to Gena Philibert Ortega from a Thursday class and to Thomas.




Thanks to Thomas we learned about a new book that has just been published.

Written by a friend of ours-  Ron Arons- titled
 "Mind Mapping for Genealogy". How timely!

Yes I purchased it and will read it on the place tomorrow.

 
5 - Pinning Your Family History with Thomas McEntee ........... sponsored by Flip Pal........  This is not the first Pinning Class I've taken and after hearing if from three different presenters I think I may have it and try it again. It is another activity that will take time and will require a lot more hours in front of the computer.......... Thomas didn't just talk about Pinterest but he showed some great pinning features with Google Mapping, History Pin, Uencounter. Super information!

7-9pm Saturday Banquet with Katherine York, Archivist San Francisco: In Search of Gold and Rainbows............




Jimi Hendrix.......  anyone remember the 1960's...
San Francisco, Haight and Ashbury, the Mission District and MJ.



9-11pm New Year's Eve Party "Out With the Old and In With the New" This is celebrating 50 years of  the society beginning in January of 1964. CELEBRATE ON!! Congratulations!! AND this Jamboree is the last one for the  current  Jamboree Committee who have been together at least 10-12 years. There is a brand new Jamboree Committee waiting in wings to continue in their footsteps and with their blessing for the 2015 Jamboree. Hence the name "Out with the Old & In with the New"...... 10pm is the new Midnight for tonight.  I celebrated with all my friends and then was seen crawling to my room. I barely remember going to bed.



 





 10 - 9- 8- 7 - 6- 5- 4- 3 -2- 1 YEA!! Happy New Year and to thee Change over to the new Jamboree Committee. Good Luck.

Paula and Leo and all their committee have done a wonderful job, The Jamboree is the best conference on the west coast - very professional and very progressive. Thank You.

Shopping Saturday - Bargains Bargains and More Classes at JAMBOREE

What a great day at Jamboree.........  a full day of learning and growing in knowledge and skills

This morning was all things free. All these sessions were for the entire morning. You could visit the Southern California Genealogical Society Library. It is a wonderful library with something for everyone. I sure wish we had the space to do extra activities and events like they hold at their library all the time. What a plus for their members!  Also offered was 'Genealogy World Roundtable Discussions'- a whole list of topics being offered . There is a Librarians' Genealogy Boot Camp plus. Jamboree and  SCGS: What You Need to Know........ and the last offering was Genealogy Society Development Workshop.

Also offered for a cost were two workshops:
There was a 'Ye Olde Handwriting Workshop'  -Yes, reading and understanding old documents.  Also offered was a  'German Handwriting Workshop' - Reading German Gothic Handwriting. Plus a session offered 'Introduction to Genealogy - first steps.'

Denise and Scott Richmond (you remember Denise!!) are off and running. Marilyn headed out to the library and I attended the Genealogy Society Development Workshop.

There were three sessions......... 1- Engaging the Next Generation with Elyse Doerflinger and Josh   Taylor (name sound familiar? Root Cellar SGS's 2015 Spring Seminar Speaker)........  key words here are social networking, having to do business differently or we won't get the 21sters attention. The buzz is technology, make it fun, don't overwhelm them by asking the next generation to fill out a pedigree chart, they will walk away. We need to rethink Genealogy 101 to make it enjoyable and fun for this next generation.   Suggestion was to play genealogy and history games to make it fun, to use YouTube for a series of help sessions and something called MashUps (I don't know what that is, sorry) .

I was really blown away with '10 Tips for Finding Newsletter Content with Gena Philibert Ortega. So many great ideas for newsletter content but could also be used for blogging and for all newsletter on other subjects.  Excellent suggestions.


The last session for the morning was 'Making the Case: Change and Technology in Your Society' with Randy Whited......... Very good. Change us always difficult and hard to do for a lot of people. This session was mainly for an open discussion of what is wrong in the society's and how to help and what is going right and why........  these are always good sessions because there are so many society's in attendance - small, medium and large ones and most have similar problems........  money, meeting place, volunteers, attracting new  plus younger members. It would be wonderful if all the people in the room were all in one society... that would be outstanding.

One of the afternoon sessions was 'Manuscript Finding Aids: locating Migrating Family Records with Paula Stuart Warren. I really enjoyed this session because I know nothing about Manuscripts and don't know how or where to locate them. So now I have gotten a little head start. This was a Live streamed session so maybe some of you watched it.  What did you think about the information? This is something I will have to give a lot of thought.

Ending the day by attending the California State Genealogical Alliance board meeting......  yes, I am on the board. By-Law discussion and changes so you know what that means! They attempt to schedule regular board meetings during a major conference or in connection with a conference to keep the meeting open to the public and be able to get more exposure. Some of you may remember that they have held several board meetings during Family History Day with the California State Archives.

Follow Friday - Jamboree DNA Day

Wow what a long day but a good day.......... I took so many DNA classes today I am almost DNA'd out!! Well for today anyway.
.

Registration went smoothly. Roots Magic again sponsored the Jamboree
Bags........  excellent, carries a lot, and strong.

1-How DNA will Change the Face of Irish Genealogy with Dr Maurice Gleeson  (Psychiatrist and Pharmaceutical Physician, Actor and Genetic Genealogist) "Since genetic genealogy emerged as a new science, man researchers (both academic and Citizen Scientists) have been exploring the genetic signature of the Irish."  Good presentation but I don't have any Irish so I guess it was not as important to me as it was to others. But I do want to watch a movie called "Philomenia" .... that's all I know.

2-Making the Connection Between You Family Tree and DNA with Cheri Mello (Genealogist. Math Teacher with degrees in psychology, sociology, human and child development and master's in education) "....learning how to maximize the results by generating a Gedcom to pinpoint the common ancestor" the entire session was all about how to create a GedCom and export it and import it. Cheri showed this process with every genealogy software. The purpose of this exercise was to be able to create a gedcom to import it into your space with the results and matches with your DNA results. Also she went over how to look at other's gedcoms and how to read them. I am interested in creating several gedcom's with only certain included, so I will be working on that.

3-Beyond X and Y: The Promise and Pitfalls of Autosomal DNA Testing with Bonny Robinson Cook (Genetic Genealogist) & Judy G Russell JD, CG, CGL (Professional Genealogist, Lawyer, Author and she runs the blog 'The Legal Genealogist') ....... "Autosomal DNA testing is the new kid on the block." Judy is such a power house speaker. She knows her stuff but is self taught. Her specialty is the law but is self taught in the DNA arena............   the new buzz word in Autosomal. As most of you know ........ DNA-  is a test for male to male to male (father to father to father) and only males take this test; mtDNA is a test that goes up the mothers line - mother to mother to mother- all children (male & female) & all granddaughters receive DNA from their mothers. AND now the new kid on the block AUTOSOMAL/family finder/ relative finder. Everyone benefits from the test. BUT always always use the DNA results and information along with the paper trail.  They work together.

LUNCHEON:  PANEL- Peering into the Future of Genetic Genealogy with Blaine Bettinger PhD, JD (The Genetic Genealogist) ; Jake Byrnes PhD (AncestyDNA); Bennett Greenspan (Family Tree DNA); Joanna Mountain PhD (23andMe); Diahan Southard (Genetic Genealogy Consultant) " What new DNA tests or tools will be available to genealogists in the next year? The next five years?" All I can say is I was very hungry by the time noon came around and I ate everything in sight. Guess who I sat with?  Denise Richmond and hubby Scott. They look great. So good to see them again.

4-Using Autosomal DNA to Explore Your Ancestry with Blaine Bettinger PhD, JD (The Genetic Genealogist) "Genealogists can use autosomal DNA for ethnicity estimates, finding long lost cousins, and examining specific problems, including adoption." Do not overestimate what the DNA can do for you.

5-Autosomal DNA: Discovering Your Ancestors in You with CeCe Moore. (Professional Genetic Genealogist, and is owner of The DNA Detectives)"Examples from CeCe's research will be shared to demonstrate the potential for using autosomal DNA to discover more about our ancestors." Something new for me is using spreadsheets, a lot of elbow grease, and chromosome mapping. his is something I can follow but don't know how to do it. ahhhh something new to learn,

6-Advanced Techniques for Use of Autosomal DNS Tests to Break Through Genealogists Brick Walls with Tim Janzen MD (South Tabor Family Physicians Portland Oregan- Family Practice Physician) "... will describe how to use autosomal DNA tests to solve genealogical questions. ... with many examples", this was way over my head, I didn't understand much of anything. Again, a lot of the discussion was about using spreadsheets for chromosome mapping. AHHHHHHH!!!!

7-FamilyTreeDNA Open Discussion and Assistance.... the final hour of the day is devoted to Q&A and personal assistance by each of the three major DNA testing companies.  (I have chosen Family Tree DNA ...  the others are AncestryDNA and 23&Me.) I am not sure that I can even repeat some of the questions being asked and the answers given. I wanted to know very basic things like if I have taken the mtDNA, and autosomal and my sons have taken the YDNA and the autosomal - is the  program able to make matches through all the different tests or is the comparison only between mtDNA to others that have taken the mtDNA. OR YDNA to YDNA? simple. But I didn't ask, I will wait to till the exhibit hall opens tomorrow and ask then.

The new buzz words in DNA are Autosomal, SNP, Chromosome Mapping, Triangulation, Genetic Genealogy. So get ready for it...........

Marilyn made it in safely today, so we went to dinner at the Daily Grill in the hotel. We had a great talk about DNA day and the Jamboree coming up. I had the best blackened tilapia with asparagus and brown rice. The price was too much but the portions were large.........   boy that was so good.

This has been a very long and very full day, lots of information, lots to think about, I am so tireddddddd ...........................................................ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Those Places Thursday - Headed South for the Southern California JAMBOREE 2014

Up Up Up & away Wednesday afternoon on flight #3383 Southwest Airlines to Burbank Bob Hope Airport and shuttled to the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel. Weather is great, smooth check in and unpacked. Nice comfortable room on the second floor overlooking the front of the hotel . I did go
exploring (not that I haven't been here 10 other times) but I was anxious to see familiar faces and see what they had been up too in this past year. I could feel the anticipation in the air......  see signs of the JAMBOREE 2014 forming up in the hallways, lobby and conference areas......Ran into Leo Myers (co-chair) and Vicki Hilb (Program Chair).Vicki was waiting for the DNA speakers to check in.  Leo is just walking the halls putting out little fires before conference begins. Good Guy!! Just look for the guy in the plaid shorts. Got to meet Dr,Maurice Gleeson. He will be opening speaker for DNA Day. Very nice guy. And then Judy Russell also stopped by to check in. If her name is familiar, it should be, she writes the LEGAL GENEALOGIST blog. Excellent blog, you should have it bookmarked. Had a great genealogy discussion with a member of the Marriott Hotel . Yes, it is good to be back here again.. The Southern California Genealogical Society puts together an excellent conference - this is their 45th Annual JAMBOREE....
Can you imaginen starting this 45 years ago and seeing it grow and change but the goal was and is always the same- educate,teach,  help researchers. The Jamboree is probably the largest multi-day conference on the west coast. I can see it continuing for many years to come.

Surprise surprise they have changed the carpeting from last year......... I know I know big deal!!

 And I have to take back what I siad about internet earlier.... I have to say thank you to the Marriott Hotel for the free wifi..........  in years past you either paid for wifi in your rooms or you were in the lobby with undependable free wifi......... it made it difficult and expensive to continue with blogging etc but this year is different. I found a letter in my room from Marriot saying they are proud to announce 'a new internet experience' has been initiated and so they are suspending charging for the basic connection throughout this introductory period. YIPPEY!!! so far so good......... my wallet thanks you.

I am kicking back and relaxing tonight because it will be non-stop on-the-go through Sunday. I have downloaded the PINK SHEETS (Jamboree Bible) and studying it for a while. I am the room monitor for Dr Maurice Gleeson. So I need to be able to answer questions and direct participants.  I did treat myself to a nice dinner at the hotel- a little pricey. I am in the lobby right now finishing up this post and will be visiting with others and knitting.

Madness Monday - "Gene Diggs" ?

 Let's go to the Gene-Diggs. 

                                          Ok! But what is a Gene-Diggs?

Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society has had several of these over the years. The name Gene-Diggs is just what we named this event- maybe we were thinking 'digging into genealogy'. This is usually the better part of a day, when members come together with their own books, magazines, maps, & other research materials that they would simply like to share with other members for the day. It has been lot of fun, but really needs to be coordinated and well thought through. 

The last time we put one together, we had a great turn out. AND more books than we could handle. It was wonderful to see so many members participating. Welcome from Judy..... 
Of course we made sure that they had their names in each of their books, magazines or other materials. They also brought a list of what they brought for our protection as well as their own. We had a copier machine available. We had several laptops with CD capability so that members could look at any of the many CD's we had in our CD library. The room was set up very simple with long tables and many chairs........ We had gone to AAA for maps of the USA in particular and hung those up on the walls for reference. We were able to get a hold of several European, African and Japan, Australia & New Zealand maps which were also on the walls for display and reference.  We made table toppers, dividing the tables into definite areas of the world and the USA.......  books and materials were placed on the appropriate tables as members arrived.

So now members have choices of reference materials and they know what table they are located. We did have an area for just reference books ie: The Red Book, HandyBook etc.

As you can see below we do have lots of CD's & DVD's available for research......... 











We were able to bring 3 copiers and they were in use almost the entire time. Now that is a good thing.



FOOD!!! sweet! Of course you can always find food and drink not too far away. It is in another room and kept there but members were always breaking and continuing discussions around the counter of food and drink. 



                                   Discussion with others OR being by yourself.......  it all works!








It might be time for another day of research with other members. It sure worked for us. It would be a good society program........TRY IT!   especially helping newer members.
