Another day of classes, another round of learning more and trying to apply it to my own
research.......... here is a sample of the classes I took today.
1-Using America's Ethnic Newspapers to Find and Document Your Family with Gena Philibert Ortega......... Excellent
2-The Scoop on Newspapers.com with Peter Drinkwater......... Excellent. Did you know that they are owned by Ancestry.com? Yep!
3-The Full Scoop of Civil Registration Records of the United Kingdom and Ireland with Kathy Warburton......... Excellent.
I almost forget about the Exhibit Hall ...... it is open and going strong. Lots of good things to see. I have purchased 3 Family Finder Kits from FamilyTree DNA- good discount..... I am really sorry to hear that AncestryDNA will not be continuing with their Y-dna and mt-dna testing- only Autosomal will be available. But they also have a good Autosomal database so I purchased my autosomal kit from them. I am so surprised though. I talked with Ancestry staff and it was just a business decision- Y or mtDNA kits being not being sold so they just made the decision to discontinue.Members will be given a time frame to download their numbers and transfer it to another company such as FamilyTreeDNA or 23andMe or somewhere else.
4- Mind Mapping Your Research Plans and Results with Thomas McEntee........... this afternoon started off a little rocky for Thomas..... technical problems and the IT's were called and they came in from everywhere. As the old joke goes, How many tech's does it take to ............. ?
Well they had Thomas up and running in no time. While they were working on the problem, Thomas just carried on with Q&A. He was cool, calm and professional. It happens and life goes on. Lots of questions and curiosity about this 'new' idea called MIND MAPPING. Not so new but sort of new to most of us. It is a different way, a mashup of brainstorming and doing the old fashion outline - you know how you learned to outline a book or a story in school. It was a very interesting hour, a very well worth hour. I think I am going to try to incorporate this into my research. Thanks to Gena Philibert Ortega from a Thursday class and to Thomas.
Thanks to Thomas we learned about a new book that has just been published.
Written by a friend of ours- Ron Arons- titled
"Mind Mapping for Genealogy". How timely!
Yes I purchased it and will read it on the place tomorrow.
