Society Saturday - Keeping it Local - Join Us

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

It is time again to come together, hear announcements, see what is happening in the world of Root Cellar and sit back for another great presentation...............

9 Apr 2015 Thursday
Christ Community Church
5025 Manzanita Carmichael

6:15pm Open Roundtable Discussions
7pm Meeting Begins

Speaker: Melinda Herzog Landrith
Topic: Cemeteries in the Mother Lode

We look forward to this presentation especially since it is will be about the local area  and probably personal for a lot of our members and neighboring societies.

I found a great article in the Ancestry Magazine- Sep/Oct 1995 by Arlene Evans about Jim and Melinda Heirzog Landrith. It is very interesting and worth reading. It all started in 1977 in Iowa Hill when Melinda got her husband Jim to help extract the information on each head stone......  along with it being February and it started snowing. They have recorded more than 400 cemeteries. Early on Melinda learned that the DAR had recorded most of the larger cemeteries but did not go into the 'boonies' for all those smaller and forgotten gravesites. As you can see there are plenty of them. The Landriffs find the old towns by looking in the "California Gold Camps" by Erin Gudde. They have published 40 books (up through 1995) containing information on the cemeteries and a short history of the areas. The books, which are also available on microfiche at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City and through the authors.

Googling,  I found these four books at Amazon that our speaker has authored: there are no images available & none of the books are currently available
